During National Fair Housing Month, revisit AFN's brief, Heirs' Property: Acting to Preserve Wealth. Heirs’ property issues continue to be deeply entrenched in Black, Latino, and other socioeconomically disadvantaged communities across the country. Philanthropy has a vital role to play in tackling these issues and, in doing so, contributing to greater economic security in these communities. Greater philanthropic involvement in this work is imperative to the preservation and stewardship of land and other property that has been passed down, and continues to be passed down, among families in disadvantaged communities. This is a great piece highlighting cross-sector partnerships. I am particularly interested in how we “seed stronger awareness of the community development and healthcare sectors as go-to partners for impacting health.” There is such an opportunity to “work together to take their collective work farther upstream.” #socialdeterminantsofhealth

CDCs, or Community Development Corporations, have a rich history of addressing economic and social challenges in disinvested neighborhoods. Over time, these organizations have evolved from informal grassroots groups to highly structured nonprofits, gaining better access to funding and recognition. In some locations, access to funding and recognition has become tied to these organizations’ certifying as community development corporations (CDCs). How does this benefit them? Find out in this piece from our Under the Lens series—Moving Community Development Forward: https://bit.ly/3Run2ji #CDCs #NonprofitDevelopment #SocialImpactInvesting

We’re pleased to share a new impact report for the East Metro Main Street Economic Revitalization Program, which supported 42 Saint Paul nonprofits and businesses that faced immense challenges the past four years due to the pandemic, civil unrest and other obstacles. With support from Mardag Foundation and other funding partners, the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development granted $3.7 million to nonprofits and $3.3 million to businesses in the Snelling-University-Rice Cultural District, the East Side community and along West Seventh Street in Saint Paul. 100% of the funded projects serve communities that have been historically under- and dis-invested by traditional funding, and 85% of the projects are owned or led by people of color. We’re proud to have been a partner in this program and support the vitality of East Metro communities. Have you heard about our unique Matching Fund model and how it works to empower communities? Through the Matching Fund model, also known as Pamoja4 Change, KCDF partners with communities through CBOs and CSOs to actualize their ideas for community development. Communities raise 50% of their project costs (in-cash or in-kind), while KCDF matches the other 50%, hence the name, Matching Fund. This model develops community ownership in projects and helps them to thrive and become self-sustaining.
