If business is tough, you may be considering a category extension or brand expansion as a “fix.” The reality is you may be at risk of missing your year end forecast, or your customer retention is waning, or the market is changing and a new trend is emerging. But, expansion is not always the magic pill. While it can attract new customers, drive incremental revenue, and infuse energy and excitement into your organization, it can also waste precious resources, both human and capital, confuse customers, and create an internal “what’s the key focus” dilemma. The key is asking the right questions, and taking careful consideration regardless of the issue you’re trying to solve. What role does your brand play in your customers' lives? Can you capture a bigger share of their world (closet, kitchen, suitcase, etc.)?
