In California, some fraudulent hospices have allegedly been exploiting homeless individuals and methadone patients by offering them a regular supply of opioids in return for enrolling in hospice care. Practices like this cannot be tolerated and strict penalties must be enforced against these fraudulent providers. https://lnkd.in/eB9p8b_n

Transportation should not be a barrier for those seeking treatment. Grateful for Representatives Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Don Bacon (R-NE), and David Valadao (R-CA) and the bipartisan legislation they've introduced that would provide transportation for folks seeking overdose prevention, substance use disorder treatment, detoxification, and supportive services. #transportation #transportationshouldnotbeabarrier #barrierstocare #treatment #substanceusetreatment #legislation #bipartisanlegislation #harmreduction #harmreductionsaveslives #overdoseprevention #substanceusedisorders #detox #detoxification #supportiveservices

That we can identify the illness and have tools to help treat it but won’t is a shame and an embarrassment. If we are genuinely concerned about preventing overdose deaths, let’s figure out how to get #access to methadone, bupenorphrine, therapy and support to more people who need and deserve a chance. #recoveryispossible #betterpatientcare

The never-ending opioid pandemic continues to rob our communities of life before anybody has a chance to die, but then death and slow revolving deaths takes its toll on our families. We need to save our democracy…vote for candidates who care about our democracy and who see that our government has a distinct and important role in caring for one another. Guns are for the militia for fears that black and brown people will begin to outnumber white people, but white forget that non-whites are very diverse. Mentally ill people, including family members should not possess weapons that can kill so many people very quickly. The jails and prisons are not adequate solutions to building mental health systems. Systems must include de-criminalizing drug use, building more detoxification stations, and increasing the number of intensive in-patient treatment facilities including prescription medications to bridge practicing addicts into sobriety. Increase the number and kind of culturally responsive after-care recovery houses for recovering addicts who then need to be trained in continuing sobriety and workforce training skills. Recovering addicts and family members need to be provided community volunteering opportunities to learn how to be together again, in a safe environment. Addicts and those impacted by addicts are no longer free. On this Ash Wednesday - we as Americans are entering a period of meditating upon the Passion, the scourging and spitting upon the homeless and prowling burglars addicted to drugs and of diminished mental health. When we look into the mirror, who do we see? As one of my ancestors would often say on Valentine’s Day and every day, A little love goes a long way.

We had a lot of great momentum on overdose prevention last year, and I’m immensely proud of the work that the Overdose Prevention Initiative and our partners accomplished. But there’s still work to be done, and in 2024, advocates and policymakers must focus on closing the gap in OUD treatment. In my latest for The Hill, I called on Congress to take three steps to making treatment more accessible: reauthorize and expand the SUPPORT Act, expand access to methadone, and advance the Reentry and Due Process Continuity of Care Acts. Persistent action from Congress is critical to ending the overdose crisis. https://lnkd.in/eDxPmhS5

Vice Chair Schizophrenia & Psychosis Action Alliance /Communications Consultant #WavesofChange #UntreatedPsychosisKills
Could the Federal Government and both parties be closer to repealing the discriminatory Institutions for Mental Diseases (IMD) exclusion which denies urgent medically necessary treatment to people living with treatable neurological brain diseases like #schizophrenia, #bipolardisorder, and/or #substanceabusedisorders? This ill conceived legislation meant to empty out the old asylums and transition very sick people into what turned out to be the empty promise of community care has been a disaster leading to untold deaths and suffering. Why are these treatable diseases still, after 60+ years, being left out in the cold from federal funding? No other diseases are fiscally discriminated against in this way. It's way past time to #EndIMDExclusion. "Nearly 60 years after Congress barred Medicaid from treating people in what were then derided as insane asylums, lawmakers are on the verge of reversing course." "They say the 1965 rule barring Medicaid, the federal-state health care program for the poor and lower-middle income, from funding hospital treatment has had unintended consequences: a lack of psychiatric beds for people who need them. Instead, they said, many vulnerable people end up on the streets, in emergency rooms, in jails or dead." "They say the policy also perpetuates discrimination against people who suffer from drug addiction and mental illness compared to those with physical conditions, for which there’s no such exclusion." #brainhealth #substanceabuse #recovery #housingthatheals #earlypsychosisprograms #psychosis #endneglect #enddiscrimination
