Really good insight into finding the “right” marketing person.

You know that "mythical marketer" that every company seems to be searching for? I know one of them, and they're looking for their next role This individual is a peer of mine that when they speak, I listen + take notes Let me drop their highlight reel for you real quick: PLAYER/COACH This person truly loves being strategic at the 30,000 ft view, but when they see an opportunity to improve something, they're quick to fly down to 300 ft to either make the execution themselves or to coach a direct report on not just what + how to do it, but why they're doing it as well DATA-MINDED AND CREATIVE I know, it's usually a "pick one" type scenario, but this person can truly do both. It's honestly not fair when they've told me what they've done before by sorting through data to gather insights about something and then go on to do some of the most creative marketing I've ever heard of. M SHAPED MARKETER T-shaped marketers are great, don't get me wrong. But instead of having one deep expertise + working knowledge of other aspects of marketing, they have areas of deep expertise. And in today's market, the 3 expertise that they have are 3 of the areas most every company needs help with: marketing operations, field marketing, and demand generation I could go on about this person, but I said I'd keep it to the highlight reel + that's what I'm sticking to. Now's the part where you come in. They could take a job at most any software company, but I've seen firsthand that magic that happens when a perfect "match" is made between a candidate + company. So I want to help make that match. Looking for the perfect employee for a marketing position? Here are three important questions I always ask candidates: 1. Have you ever invested your money in advertising? If a candidate has never invested his or her money in advertising, he or she will probably treat your money like playing chips. This question will help you understand how much he or she appreciates and understands the value of advertising campaigns. 2. What is the primary task you think we're hiring for? We don't just want an ad campaign exec, but someone who understands the strategic importance of each campaign to business growth - whether it's for immediate results or long-term development. 3. How will you measure your performance and what KPIs will you set for yourself? Forget about hours and clicks. We're interested in ROI and revenue growth. If a candidate doesn't talk about this, they don't understand the essence of the advertising function in a business. These three simple questions will help you find a marketer who not only knows how to create ads, but also knows how to maximize your profits.

As a person who creates content for millions of people, I am noticing a strong trend. Companies both foreign and domestic reach out to me and people who do what I do in order to co brand and sell products. Not only that, but other organizations are now adding people with large social media audiences to their companies as a way to gain more visibility and convert more sales. The new wave of hiring effective sales people is hiring people who can not only network face to face, but they can also build effective audiences that lead to more sales. Teach your sales team how to create content that creates community and eventually generates leads. Don’t fall behind. If your team doesn’t want to learn the skill of building a digital community then you need to add people who are interested in growing that way! Sales is no longer either or, it’s both and.
