Over the last 50 years, the EPA has made incredible strides in reducing emissions, from the 1970 Clean Air Act to the introduction of SmartWay in 1994. Today, roughly 99% of newly manufactured vehicles are cleaner. Why we are advocating for a harmonized approach to Periodic Technical Inspection to reduce congestion, cut CO2 emissions and streamline costs Mandated for heavy vehicles, PTI ensures safety and environmental compliance. Yet, the existing disparities in national regulations significantly contribute to congestion and environmental concerns, particularly in the context of cross-border operations! 🌐 The European Transport Board's call for unified PTI in Europe The European Transport Board is calling for a mutual PTI recognition to elevate safety and operational efficiency for trailers across EU borders, while reducing congestion and CO2 emissions. Our latest article delves into the intricacies of PTI standards, emphasizing the evident need for mutual recognition. It also introduces a trial inspecting Dutch-registered trailers, leveraging advanced technology for continuous assessment and proposing Europe-wide recognition. 📈 How we envision the future of PTI 'Smart' trailers are poised to redefine the inspection process, diminishing the reliance on manual checks. Real-time data will provide opportunities for proactive maintenance, and we advocate for an legislative evolution to support these advancements. 🔗 Read our detailed proposal: https://lnkd.in/dsjc_aGr Join us for a greener and safer European transportation landscape! #ETBInsights #MutualRecognitionPTI #SmartTransport #SustainableMobility

It was a pleasure to chair the panel discussion for the launch of Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)'s new report on zero emission buses alongside Rebecka Steven, Eliot Wilde, report author Sukky Choongh (she/her), with Chris Gall and Konstanze Scharring presenting. Buses are already one of the greenest ways to travel & the most popular form of public transport - with zero emission fleets, they can be even greener 💚 We discussed what's needed to speed up the transition: 👨⚖️ regulatory certainty 💷 long-term funding ⚡ charging infrastructure Above all, transitioning to greener fleets make more commercial sense for operators if bus use keeps growing, and we talked about the policy levers needed to deliver this. Thanks to SMMT for recognising and highlighting this important issue and for inviting me to chair. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/ehVDynjf

🚚 Various electric van adoption difficulties continue, BVRLA warns 🚚 Fleets are still facing multiple issues with electric van adoption, which have contributed to falling registrations of the vehicles, according to the BVRLA. The organisation has highlighted electric van concerns in its latest Road to Zero Report, which analyses its members’ progress towards fleet electrification. Speakers at the organisation's Fleets in Charge conference, discussing issues including charging infrastructure and vehicle functionality, included the BVRLA's Toby Poston and Gerry Keaney, and fleet managers Rob Simister and Colin Hutt. A broad coalition of transport companies, shippers, and industry stakeholders are calling EU policy makers to vote in favour of the revised CO2 standards for trucks. The updated CO2 emission standards for HDVs will rapidly increase the number of #zeroemission #trucks available for sale over the coming years and thereby bring down technology costs and vehicle prices. This is crucial so that businesses can fulfil their own commitments, decarbonise their vehicle fleets and leverage the global leadership opportunities of transitioning to zero-emission trucks such as social, employment and air quality benefits. Find out why MEPs should vote in favour on April 10th. https://bit.ly/43LxUhl

The Big Game is this Sunday, and that means a super busy day for food deliveries. Did you know that over 48 million Americans will get a food delivery on Sunday (1 in 7 people)? These deliveries will emit the equivalent of 4.28 million metric tons of CO2 on Sunday Feb 11 alone, enough to fill over 400,000 football fields. If all these delivery vehicles were EVs, that number would drop to 0. Heavy duty trucking generates 25% of Europe’s overall CO2 emissions. Yesterday, the EU took a huge step towards reducing this and improving the air we breath by agreeing to new CO2 standards regulation which will reduce CO2 emissions from this highly emitting sector by 90% by 2040 and require that all new city busses in Europe be zero emission by 2035. The #EVcharging community is well underway in laying the groundwork for the needed #ChargingInfrastructure for the growing eHDV fleet. Broadly speaking, this is happening in a phased in approach: 1️⃣ Semi-public depot charging 2️⃣ Public charging for #LastMile, #MiddleMile and & short haul defined routes 3️⃣ Charging to support long haul trucking coming At this still early stage of the market, new technology, new site designs, and new business models tailored to the HDV use case are being developed while access to data, adequate power and seizable lots are being worked out. Still, we are confident in the growth of this industry, as 80% of trucks travel less than 500km a day in Europe and drivers are required to take a break, meaning ample time for charging and well within range.
