A big thank you to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engines program for driving innovation, fostering inclusive economic growth, increasing R&D investment, developing global leaders, and creating sustainable innovation ecosystems across regions. Peter Schlosser and Brian Sherman from NSF Engines: Southwest Sustainability Innovation Engine (SWSIE) were pleased to join partners and leaders from 31 EDA Tech Hubs, 9 NSF Regional Innovation Engines, investors, and representatives from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Science Foundation at the Innovative Capital Summit in Washington, D.C. this week. After the Summit, Peter and Brian had the opportunity to meet with NSF Director Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan, Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves, and the co-sponsors of the enabling legislation for the NSF Engines, Sen. Todd Young and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, at a reception at the U.S. Capitol. The U.S. government is coordinated and aligned with strong bipartisan support for emerging technology centers nationwide! Championing Translational Research | Innovation Ecosystem Builder | Advocate for Experiential Learning, Lifelong Learning and Delivering Positive Societal Impact from Science Investments |
This is a significant moment for the nation's scientific enterprise - it represents the desire of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and The White House to build a solid foundation for future U.S. economic growth accelerated by a robust STEM-based, use-inspired R&D enterprise that brings solutions to benefit society. My team worked hard to identify these inaugural cohort of awardees over the last year, and are looking forward to supporting these ten awardees over the next two years as they seek to establish regional innovation ecosystems in their regions of interest. This would not have been possible without the great leadership of Sethuraman Panchanathan, Erwin Gianchandani, Gracie Narcho, the vision of legislative leaders in Congress, the support of multiple Administrations, and the incredibly hard working team that I have here: Florence Rabanal, Michal Ziv-El, Rebecca Shearman, Dmitri Perkins, Daniel Goetzel, Joda Thongnopnua, Xueying Han, Alan J Cohen, Geoffrey Brown, Yueyue Fan, Kimberly Elman Zarecor, Laura Biggerstaff, Kristin Calahan, Rachel Shackelford, Grace Yuan, Kelly Monterroso, Angela Drumm, Patrick Breen, Joe Kittle, Jennifer Shymansky, Ben Patterson, Tatiana Makarow, among many others here at the NSF. I also want to highlight the incredible partnerships that each of these ten awardees have brought together: over $530M that will greatly amplify our initial $150M in investment into these ten Engines. These NSF Engines are going to demonstrate how powerful multi-sector partnerships can be a force for good for the region at large. Please join me in celebrating this inaugural cohort of awardees, led by these talented ecosystem builders and regional leaders: Dr. John Allgair, Mike Freeman, Alaina Harkness, Andrew J. Maas, Sara Chester, Gary Green, Colleen Fitzgerald, Ph.D., Ahsan Choudhuri, Peter Schlosser and Per Stromhaug. The detailed data on the strengths that these NSF Engines are bringing to the fore can be found in the links embedded in the press release below. #nsfengines #scienceandtechnology #innovationecosystem #jobsofthefuture #leadership #sustainability #regionaldevelopment #economicdevelopment #innovation #technology #startups #economicempowerment #workforcedevelopment #entrepreneurmindset #entrepreneurship #capitalinvestment #stategovernment #congress #senate #whitehouse #OSTP
NSF has named its 10 first-ever NSF Regional Innovation Engines. With a potential investment of $1.6 billion over the next decade, these awards will transform entire regions into self-sustaining hubs of economic activity driven by technology and innovation. Today's $150 million investment is going to 10 teams spanning 18 states, representing one of the single largest broad investments in place-based research and development in the nation's history. "Through these NSF Engines, NSF aims to expand the frontiers of technology and innovation and spur economic growth across the country," said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan. "We face a transformational moment for our nation. NSF is putting leadership in science and technology at the center of how we meet this moment." To learn more, visit https://bit.ly/49bRAfV

“The New Frontier is here whether we seek it or not. Beyond that frontier are uncharted areas of science and space…It would be easier to shrink from that new frontier, to look to the safe mediocrity of the past, to be loved by good intentions and high rhetoric…But I believe the times demand new invention, innovation, imagination, decision.” President Kennedy In the 1960s, his visionary leadership shaped the development of the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina, which became a global case study for cluster development and regional innovation. Yesterday, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced 10 awardees of the Regional Innovation Engines Program that aims to invest $160 million ($1.6 billion in total over ten years) into the new frontiers of innovation in communities that have not received significant investment or engagement in the innovation economy. These new frontiers not only have the infrastructure and talent to innovate, but also the propensity to move our nation forward, attract industry & capital, and foster shared prosperity. #InclusiveInnovation #EcosystemDevelopment #NewFrontierNetwork https://lnkd.in/ehRK4V8p

Visiting Professor University at Technology Sydney, Executive Director, Acton Institute for Policy Research and Innovation
The conflation of research and development (R&D) and innovation is a widespread issue in innovation policy, frequently leading to misconceptions about how policy is developed, designed, and executed. Understanding why this confusion exists requires an examination of the fundamental distinctions between R&D and innovation, the nature of innovation as an economic, social, and management concept, and the pervasive mindset of the "linear flow" model of innovation. The concepts of R&D and Innovation have a complex and mutually beneficial relationship, with each playing an important role in driving technological advancements, economic growth, natural capital protection and preservation, and societal progress. Understanding this connection is critical for developing effective policies and building a strong innovation ecosystem. https://wix.to/HyPKSW8

Technology plays a crucial role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 🌍. While many participants at the United Nation’s High-Level Political Forum 2024 expressed the difficulty of meeting the #GlobalGoals and the need for more investments, there was a shimmer of hope in the panel on science, technology, and innovation. According to Mr. Carlos Henrique Brito Cruz, Senior Vice-President, Research Networks, at Elsevier, capacity building has increased based on the data on research conducted on sustainable development. #tech4good #SGD #HLPF #GlobalLeadership
