My goal is to use my knowledge and skills in psychology to optimise the wellness of individuals and of society at large.
For those working in the NDIS space with children, the Developmental Disabilities - Children's Global Assessment Scale is a good tool to use for measuring a child's functional capacity. Figure 2 in the article I have provided the link to, can be altered to include all of the NDIS functional domains instead of the three listed. I hope this is helpful. https://lnkd.in/gqWWftDT

Providing Neuro-affirming Diagnostic Evaluations for Autism in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire
From the ASAN: "The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a proposed rule to ban the use of electric skin shock devices for behavior modification. The Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC), an institution in Massachusetts, uses these devices on some of the people that live there. People get painfully shocked for things like swearing, standing up, hurting themselves, and much more." --- Here's a plain language guide about #StopTheShock and how you can help: https://buff.ly/49L87Hq --- #Autistic #Autism #Autist #AuDHD #AdultAutism #AdultAutistic #adultDx #AutismAwareness #ADHD #AdultADHD #LateDiagnosed #Neurodiversity #Neurodivergent #Neurodivergence #psychiatry #psychnp #pmhnp #aprn #therapy #mentalhealth

✨Psychiatrization of Resistance: The Co-option of Consumer, Survivor, and Ex-patient Movements✨ 🌿A recent qualitative study of interviews with psychosocial disability shows how discourses of psychiatrization can operate 💡Through structural and interpersonal power dynamics to stifle resistance. 🌱Participants who were interviewed described several practices by MGMH groups that created barriers 💡To the full inclusion of people with psychosocial disabilities in decision-making processes. 🌿These ranged from subtle put-downs to what appeared to be deliberate attempts to “tokenize” and “co-opt” their contributions. 🌱Several activist participants described having the experience of feeling stuck when deciding between whether to engage in certain projects 💡or to remove themselves and their organizations entirely. 🌿Participants feared that participating risked lending a sort of legitimacy to a project they did not agree with, 🌱by giving the appearance that it included lived-experience perspectives, 🌿but it could also allow them to have some influence on removing the parts they found most dangerous. 💡On the other hand, if they refused to participate, it could send a message that these projects need to be more inclusive from the start, 🌱but it risked allowing a project to move forward that would perpetuate psychiatrization 🌿Without regard to psychosocial disability advocates' political concerns. 💡One participant is quoted, as describing this experience as “tokenism,” saying that “in these institutionalized spaces people with psychosocial disabilities are seen only as an endorsement. 🌱They care about our testimony, not our participation in any active way that could lead to transformation.” 🌿He added, however, that “the lack of alternatives forces us to take advantage of any space that is open to make change, to transform” Interventionsnts found that allowing professional psychiatrists to collaborate on these interventions risked “co-option”. 💡Organizations of people with psychosocial disabilities and scholar-activists have explicitly addressed the risks inherent in collaboration. 🌱Unless the power of the psychiatric narrative is upended. 📌Read the full paper here 👇 https://lnkd.in/etPKzpRn 📔Studies ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ 🔥#LivedExperience #Leadership #MentalHealth #Workplace #Peer #CoProduction 🔔 Follow the Lived Experience Advisory Directory's daily updates here👇 https://lnkd.in/e2M-hu5P 💡The Lived Experience Advisory Directory. Here is an Interview I conducted with Olawale Dada, a Person Living With Cerebral Palsy for TheCable.ng, TheCable Newspaper. I am also someone who live with Disability. This Interview made me to know more about the Problems facing People Living With Disabilities/People With Disabilities (PLWDs/PWDs), serious issues actually, and the fact that they are not getting adequate support. I hope to continue to advocate for Policies and do other Things that can make lives better for them and hopefully do this successfully, someday. #PeopleLivingWithDisabilities #PeopleWithDisabilities #PLWDs #PWDs https://lnkd.in/daP4YFzC

Developmental disabilities prevalence appears to be significant worldwide. In India, around 10% of children have developmental disabilities, according to RBSK. Sensory sensitivity has also been associated with behavioural feeding problems among children with developmental disabilities. Hence, the current study aimed to assess sensory sensitivity and behavioural feeding problems among children with developmental disabilities attending Child Developmental Centre of Safdarjung hospital, New Delhi. #behaviouralfeedingproblems #ChildDevelopmental #Developmentaldisabilities #SafdarjungHospital #Sensorysensitivity

“As the FDA reported in its proposed rule, there is ample evidence based on research literature, expert and survivor testimony, and even the JRC’s own operational manuals of a wide range of physical and psychological adverse effects associated with ESD use. These include depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, fear, panic, substitution of other negative behaviors, worsening of underlying symptoms, and learned helplessness." #StopTheShock Tell the FDA, the JRC, and the world - this abuse has to stop. --- https://buff.ly/3R0dFY8 #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs 💪🏻 #Autistic #Autism #Autist #AuDHD #AdultAutism #AdultAutistic #adultDx #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutisticRightsAreHumanRights #ADHD #AdultADHD #LateDiagnosed #Neurodiversity #Neurodivergent #Neurodivergence #AutRes #psychNP #pmhnp #aprn #therapy #MentalHealth #BreakTheStigma #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthAdvocate #EndTheStigma #MentalHealthMatters #ItsOkayToNotBeOkay #MentalHealthcare #may2024 #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #MentalHealthMonth

As we near the end of National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we want to highlight the challenges that some birthing people with disabilities face. We encourage healthcare providers to learn about the disabilities their patients have and to implement strategies to improve the perinatal experiences of birthing people with disabilities. "The study found that the lack of autism-informed transition and employment supports for Autistic people post school posed a significant barrier, with the transition requiring adapting to new routines and environments, potentially causing anxiety, and disrupting feelings of belonging. Many participants reported that they had not previously held employment roles for any extended duration of time. Many participants also spoke of past workplace experiences marred by social isolation, bullying, and a lack of understanding in both educational and work environments." -- #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs 💪🏻 #Autistic #Autism #Autist #AuDHD #AdultAutism #AdultAutistic #adultDx #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutisticRightsAreHumanRights #ADHD #AdultADHD #LateDiagnosed #Neurodiversity #Neurodivergent #Neurodivergence #psychNP #pmhnp #aprn #therapy #MentalHealth #BreakTheStigma #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthAdvocate #EndTheStigma #MentalHealthMatters #ItsOkayToNotBeOkay #MentalHealthcare #may2024 #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #MentalHealthMonth
