Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation’s Post

University of Newcastle has lodged a State Significant Development Application for its proposed student accommodation building in Newcastle, marking a major milestone for the project. This is set to house up to 445 students and address the critical shortage of accommodation for those who wish to study and live in the city. The proposed 9-storey building will also feature ground floor facilities and retail, as well as outdoor communal areas, bringing more people and activity into Honeysuckle. The submission will be assessed to ensure it aligns with regulatory requirements and community interests, and work is expected to begin on site later this year. More at https://bit.ly/4eT1UfT

Not that long ago people were moaning about the dead heart of Newcastle. Commercial activity in 'The Mall' had all but dried up compared to its more vibrant days in the 70's and 80's. I wonder how many of those people would have seen the University of Newcastle as now perhaps the primary source of rejuvenation? Ok, this is the other end of town but still, I'm hoping this new bloom of development will slowly spread east. The commercial flow-on in supporting the growing academic presence will likely be significant.

Lets hope that the proposal requires that the builder be iCERT (5) recognition and that their is independence demonstrated between the builder and Principal Certifier.

Great to hear and will add a vibrancy to the area and accomodation for students in town! What a great result by HCCDC and University of Newcastle, a long time coming but worth the wait!
