I have shared about this before - but AmeriCorps allowed me the opportunity to serve my community as a first-generation college student. I used my AmeriCorps Segal Award to make monthly payments on my excessive student-loan debt. It was a game changer as someone who had to work almost full-time as a student and couldn't take on any internships while in college. Consider sending a message to your senators about increasing funding to AmeriCorps for FY25. "These proposed cuts come during a difficult time when demand for AmeriCorps is greater than the funding available. In fact, what is needed is more funding – not less. Without increased funding in FY25, more than 34,000 AmeriCorps and 6,000 AmeriCorps Seniors positions will be eliminated next year. The House bill would serve a death knell, eliminating at least 71,000 AmeriCorps positions. Congress is facing some challenging decisions about spending priorities and that is why we need to urge them to support AmeriCorps. There is an explosion of needs in our country and now is the time to invest in AmeriCorps, not cut it." - Voices for National Service https://lnkd.in/erry9bmU

Today, our Executive Director attended a meeting organized by the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE). Representatives from other civil society organizations (CSOs) in our district (Rumphi) were also present. This provided a valuable forum for discussing governance issues and challenges faced in the district and collaboratively exploring potential solutions. Furthermore, the meeting offered an insightful glimpse into NICE's work, particularly its program empowering young women and girls with computer literacy skills. Notably, our Executive Director herself benefited from this program after completing her MSCE. We warmly encourage fellow females to participate in this valuable initiative, which equips participants with essential skills and a recognized certificate. We particularly commend NICE's commitment to promoting women's political participation, as demonstrated by their "Boma Lathu" project in Karonga district. This initiative empowers women to stand for various positions, aligning with Girls Evolve's mission of fostering equal political participation for women as future leaders. Viva NICE!

I provide tangible solutions for increased K-12 school-community engagement for Black families and students via keynotes, professional learning workshops, and consultation.

Camino Research Institute (CRI) delivered its 2024 Western North Carolina (WNC) Latino Community Strengths & Needs Assessment Report, shared by CRI Manager Sarai Ordonez, who was the excellent project lead. The survey mostly captures the strengths, needs, gaps, and actual preferences and priorities of Hispanic and Latino/a/e people in WNC and in particular the undocumented population, whose voices are rarely heard, much less understood. 91% of survey respondents are immigrants from 16 different countries of origin, with 71% from Mexico. What do survey respondents value most about the Latino people and community? Latinos recognize and take pride in their work ethic and entrepreneurship, as well as volunteering, cultural diversity, dependability, and sense of family and unity. Latino concerns include the need for greater access to healthcare, including dental care, preventative healthcare, vision care, and mental healthcare; access to systems, including healthcare systems, with greater bilingual competency; and access to drivers licenses to increase system engagement and improve overall quality of life. I encourage everyone to read the report and learn more about our Latino/a/e community. I serve on Camino's WNC Community Advisory Board—the only non-Latino on a board of fabulous Latino leaders and difference makers. #Latino #Hispanic #inclusion #healthcare #wellbeing #diversity #community
Over the past two years, Camino Research Institute has collaborated with trusted community organizations in Western North Carolina for the Latino Community Strengths and Needs Assessment. Our goal with this mixed method study is to better understand the experiences, strengths, and needs of the local Latino communities. We are excited to announce the release of our Western NC Latino Community Strengths and Needs Assessment report! We heard from 512 Latinos and 11 community leaders. Throughout this project, I have had the privilege of working with an amazing group of individuals committed to serving the Latino community. Thank you to each community advisory board member and co-author who were instrumental in this accomplishment. I hope the results respectfully portray the WNC Latino community and increase resources throughout the area!

Back in 2018, I first started to think about how we could get textbooks sitting unused in a class cupboard in London shared with a cash-strapped school in Yorkshire. After five years of hard graft, School Resources Exchange properly got going last year. While it has been challenging to say the least, it's also pretty amazing to be starting 2024 with a live service that is already being used by and helping hundreds of schools. The focus for this year is simple - help more schools. What we're doing is a no-brainer. It's a free service which can benefit every single school in the UK. The impact of sharing surplus items between schools is a genuine game-changer on so many levels. If you know someone connected to a school - a staff member, parent, governor, etc - be sure to tell them about us as it really could help them out enormously. 👇 The short video explains exactly what we're doing and how the service - a nationwide schools' circular sharing community - can benefit every single school in the UK. #schools #schoofunding #schoolresources #schoolbudgets #circulareconomy #communityimpact #secondaryeducation #primaryeducation #teachers #headteachers #slt #schoolbusinessmanagers
Last year our focus was on launching. This year we're excited to be growing our community and working in partnership with lots more schools. If you know someone who works in a school then be sure to tell them about us.
