Today, 2.5 billion people need at least one form of assistive product - such as wheelchairs, eyeglasses, hearing aids, prosthetics and digital devices to enable people to live independent lives. But today only 10% of people in low income countries can access the AT they need. For long-time users, though, can an upgrade to a new processor be beneficial? Lailach et al. evaluated audiological outcomes and subjective benefits in 99 patients, 69 of whom were fitted with a MED-EL implant, comparing their old processor to their new one after four weeks of wearing. The study concluded: 1. New processors can have audiological and subjective benefits. 2. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) can be used to identify patients who have subjective benefits but not audiological improvements. 3. PROMs should be integrated into the fitting process. 4.
