Myself and a good friend Jon Green and my English Springer Spaniel Bandit #banditthebombdog will be continuing our walk from July 19th-22nd 2024. Carrying our own gear and camping out under the star's. On this occasion we are planning on covering 40 miles along the Pembrokeshire Coastal path. One of Wales most beautiful coastlines.
A message from Zimbabwe:
"Water is life - and life comes from Water.
Funds are being raised to help establish a water supply in a part of Zimbabwe called Mahamara which is located in the Sebakwe wilderness area and neighbours the Sebakwe Recreational Park.
Mahamara is a prime wildlife habitat that once teemed with zebra, warthog, impala, kudu,
wildebeest, tsessebe, giraffe, sable and eland amongst other species including migratory elephant, leopard and cheetah. The area is also home to the brown hyena which is a unique and uncommon species.
As a result of illegal poaching and compounded by weather change patterns bringing irregular rains and lack of water, the wildlife has dissipated but all is not lost and there is always hope and opportunity to restore and make a positive difference which is what Mahamara is all about.
To exist and thrive, wildlife requires 3 key ingredients being
HABITAT
SECURITY
WATER.
The habitat is in place at Mahamara and a current ongoing long term project to provide security and prevent poaching is a work in progress
and which is showing positive results after 4 years of concerted effort.
In addition to the three key ingredients, conservation awareness and participation for local communities is also a major part of the programme,
but it will take more than habitat , security and conservation awareness to bring the animals back. WATER is needed as the third key ingredient. .
When vital water is supplied then life can exist and also plants and vegetation abound and the remnant animals will return to occupy the habitat to feed and drink and to feel safe in this habitat, which has the required anti poaching protection and security. The animals will then naturally breed and multiply and in short time the ecosystem and area will thrive once more.
A series of water supply works are planned, including bore holes, solar pumps, pipelines and reestablishment of old watering holes and points that will cause the wildlife to proliferate. When wildlife succeeds in an area such as Mahamara ,then the community will also thrive because the habitat and land use is being adjusted and restored to include how nature designed it to be and where value can be derived.
