We're thrilled to announce that our restaurant, kingi, has been selected as a finalist for Outstanding Sustainability and Outstanding Innovation in the Lewisham Awards 2024 by the Lewisham Foundation. Congratulations to all the other exceptional nominees in the hospitality industry! It is wonderful to see kingi acknowledged in categories so core to their kaupapa. kingi is dedicated to supporting local people who look after our oceans by using sustainable practices to ensure the fish and shellfish is caught in ways that won’t deplete fish stocks or damage other marine species. Over the past year, our collaboration with Critical. on the kingi Chopping Boards has allowed us to deepen this commitment, raising over $40,000 for the not-for-profit sustainable fishing organisation, LegaSea New Zealand. The second round of voting is now underway. If you're part of the hospitality industry, we would greatly appreciate your support. Cast your vote here: https://lnkd.in/gq7TKrTG

This is Nicola M. the Sustainability and Environmental Advisor at Port of Auckland. Nicola has facilitated the introduction of The Kai Ika Project Cans for Kai initiative at Port of Auckland to help engage staff in their waste management strategy and, in turn, help us rescue more cans to keep the Kai Ika Project wheels turning. We have put bins in their staff rooms and outdoor recreational spaces, and so far, we have recovered three full cages with 8kg of cans in each. They are absolute champions! It's World Earth Day. We want to take a moment to reflect on the vital role our oceans play in the health of our planet. Covering over 70% of the Earth, our oceans are the lifeblood of our environmental ecosystem, regulating climate and providing a home to diverse marine life. They are essential providers of food, and the lungs of our planet, producing half the oxygen we breathe. However, in New Zealand, like many other places around the world, they are constantly under threat from overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction, amongst plenty of other issues. Earth Day is a reminder to protect our oceans and the incredible fish species that inhabit them. We can all take steps to protect our oceans, including practising sustainable fishing techniques, reducing plastic use, and supporting policies that prioritise marine conservation. Check out www.fishcare.co.nz for more information on what we can all be doing when out on the water. Photo by Laura Bell

We had an epic four days at the NZ Marine's Auckland On Water Boat Show last weekend. Throughout the event, we spoke to many attendees, sparking meaningful conversations about the current state of fisheries management and encouraging everyone to participate in our show-wide "Fish Finder" challenge. Our team at The Kai Ika Project delivered several fish filleting demonstrations showcasing their effective techniques for processing fish at home. These presentations aim to educate fishers about respectful and sustainable practices, such as using the entire fish. An enormous thank you to NZ Marine and the other teams behind the Auckland On Water Boat Show for providing a platform to spread our message about removing destructive fishing techniques, rebuilding our fisheries and prioritising feeding Kiwis first. And finally, congrats to Cohen Small for winning our "Fish Finder" challenge and taking away a Garmin Echomap UHD2 7" for his old boy's boat! Indeed that's favourite child status secured for the rest of the year.

We're thrilled to announce our newest Gold Partner, NZ Marine! At LegaSea, we understand the importance of strong partnerships in driving positive change for New Zealand's marine environment. That's why we're incredibly grateful to have NZ Marine on board, supporting our mission to protect our precious inshore fishery and restore marine abundance. NZ Marine's dedication to growing the marine industry aligns perfectly with our goals here at LegaSea. Their commitment to promoting safe boating, providing training, fostering industry collaboration, and supporting member companies not only contributes to the thriving boating community in New Zealand but also plays a vital role in safeguarding our marine ecosystems. Boating isn't just a hobby—it's a way of life for millions of Kiwis, with 40% of New Zealanders participating in boating activities each year. The rise in boating participation has led to incredible growth in the marine industry, both domestically and internationally. And with over 1.5 million boats in New Zealand alone, the need for sustainable practices and conservation efforts has never been more critical. With NZ Marine by our side, we're confident in our ability to make a real difference. Their support helps us go further, faster, in our mission to protect New Zealand's marine environment for future generations. A huge thank you to NZ Marine for joining forces with LegaSea! Together, we're stronger, and together, we can achieve great things.

We wanted to thank our friend Matt Watson, who recently auctioned off some of his top-notch fishing gear in a charity auction for our cause. Matt has always been a passionate ocean-goer, and preserving our marine environments and the sealife that dwells within our waters is incredibly important to him. We really appreciate Matt being so supportive of our cause here at LegaSea. His donation of $2805 is incredibly generous and helps us to keep pushing towards our goal of more fish in the water.
