Quick reminder that HopeAustin has been selected as a finalist for the Central Texas Community Foundation Impact Award! To vote or see all the remarkable stories of our Legacy Luncheon finalists, click here: https://lnkd.in/ghdCG6yj HopeAustin creates opportunities for the youngest members of our community through food security. By providing weekend meals to students who lose their subsidized meals that are offered during the school week, HopeAustin supports the brightest future for our children and the broader community by ensuring children have every opportunity to learn and thrive without hunger. HopeAustin provides meals for 95 schools, 4600 students per week and over 110,000 meals per month in Central Texas! Research shows that children who suffer from food insecurity are more likely to have lower math scores and repeat a grade, among other challenges in areas like language, motor skills, and behavior. Children need nutrients so they can grow, develop, and focus on learning instead of thinking about the food they need. Where children face food insecurity in Austin and the surrounding areas, HopeAustin steps in to end childhood hunger one child and one meal at a time, ensuring our kids at risk of hunger are equipped to reach their full potential. Did you know? Brazil boasts one of the largest school meal programs in the world, serving upward of 40 million children in public education every day. For many, that midday meal is the only one they receive, so when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, food insecurity rates soared. As the country works to recover, its government is focused on strengthening public policies to combat hunger including increased federal funding for the program. An elementary school in São Paulo is going a step further, asking parents to manage on-site gardens and teaching youngsters how to cook with the food grown in them. The city also aims to source all school lunch supplies from producers who practice sustainable farming by 2026 and serve 100% organic meals by 2030. Though it is the students receiving free food, the program is expected to have a trickle-down effect. In low-income families, often the children eat first as the adults would rather go without. This worry is alleviated when adults know their children will be fed a proper meal at school. It is therefore argued that school meals reduce hunger not just for kids but for adults too.

Summer should be a time of joy and exploration for every child; however, it is often a tug-of-war for those experiencing food insecurity. When school is out of session, so are the free or reduced-price meals provided to nearly 25,000 children in the county. Our summer feeding program will distribute 5500 grocery boxes filled with kid-friendly food and nearly 20,000 heat & eat meals to help fill the gap for families when kids no longer have easy access to breakfast and lunch at school. Your support is crucial as we work to provide our kids the nutrition they need to keep growing and learning, even when school is not in session. Let's pull together, and beat summer hunger! https://lnkd.in/eNZrCuAp
