Stereotypes based on ethnic backgrounds often play a troubling role in assessing pain levels in chronic pain management, leading to significant disparities in care. During my doctoral research at Dentistry-Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, I was fortunate to be supervised by a visionary team that prioritized a patient-centered approach. My research focused on the use of Music as Medicine to manage the psychological components of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). The team was progressive in embracing innovative methods, such as music interventions and mindfulness, to address pain holistically. This experience not only deepened my understanding of chronic pain treatment but also highlighted the importance of moving beyond stereotypes to provide compassionate, individualized care. #DentistryMountSinai #ChronicPain #TMD #MusicMedicine #MusicTherapy #EquityHealthcare

September is Pain Awareness Month. Let’s talk about how false beliefs about race can be taught in health care and impact care. This image is from a nursing textbook called “A’ Concept-Based Approach to Learning” that was released in 2015. On the page about acute and chronic pain, it uses stereotypes to describe (without evidence) how to understand a patients pain based on their ethnic background. In 2017, Pearson apologized and changed future versions of the book. But how many nurses were exposed/ still believe these stereotypes before attention was brought to it? #medicine #joelbervell #healthcare #racialbias #nursing #painawareness #healthcareonlinkedin

The Horror of Healthcare Inequality in America: A BIPOC Perspective Happy Halloween, everyone! 🎃 But for many BIPOC communities, this "treat" feels more like a terrifying trick. You see, while the rest of the world dons costumes and enjoys spooky festivities, we're left facing the horrifying reality of healthcare inequality. It's no secret that the healthcare system in America is deeply flawed, and for BIPOC communities, the disparities are shocking and unacceptable. From implicit bias to lack of access, the way we're treated is a nightmare disguised as a "treat." Here's the horrifying truth: (1) BIPOC patients are more likely to experience medical errors and receive lower quality care. (2) We're less likely to have access to health insurance and preventative care. (3) We're often treated with bias and prejudice, leading to misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment. This isn't just a matter of statistics; it's about real lives and real people who are suffering. It's about mothers who can't get the care they need for their children, fathers who are denied life-saving treatments, and individuals who are left to navigate a complex system that seems designed to disadvantage them. This is the real horror story of America. And it's a story that needs to be told, heard, and acted upon. So, this Halloween, let's do more than just dress up. Let's speak out against healthcare inequality. Let's demand better for ourselves and our communities. Let's make our voices heard until this nightmare becomes a distant memory. Share this post. Speak to your friends and family. Contact your representatives. Let's make this Halloween a turning point in the fight for healthcare justice. #BIPOCHealthMatters #HealthcareEquality #EndTheNightmare And remember, the scariest thing of all is silence.
