When a non-profit offered nurses at a local hospital in Washington, DC., a financial workshop on the basics of investing, no nurses showed up. The non-profit organizers expected the well-educated female nurses to attend to secure their future wealth. So, when planning to do the workshops again, they changed one thing: the name. They kept the content the same, and swapped out the word investing, for the phrase financial security. This time, the room filled up with nurses. What do we learn here? Investing in people is investing in your community. How do you want to make a difference?

📈 ☣ It's most likely much higher than 60% in a lot of workplaces. What I've witnessed throughout my health and social service/care career as a Registered Social Worker (and therapist) in #BC is undereducated, incompetent, pathological and low value employees (Ie. not even good, or competent at front line jobs, if they are even qualified for them) are moved up the ranks into supervisory/managerial positions. Their ruthlessness, propensity to lie/deceive, and lack of moral, personal and professional integrity when it comes to following laws, regulations, and policies are valued within toxic and dysfunctional organizations. These 'pathologicals' then create their 'minion networks' It creates a cesspool and #toxicworkplaces that 🎯 & harm the top performers/most competent workers. They end up having nothing but staff recruitment and retention issues that are the 🐘 that everyone pretends isn't there. TOXIC MANAGERS are bad for organizations. Full 🛑 They also cost those organizations A LOT of 💰 💸 in legal fees to represent them when they get caught at what they do. Welcome to BC's health care authorities, and BC government. New research is hoping to better understand what measures should be collected on care leaver outcomes. The project brought together researchers, care-experienced facilitators, representatives from national and local government teams, as well as charities supporting care leavers, to participate in a research-informed discussion of what these measures might look like. The research uncovered six key themes: 💻 Education 💡 Employment & Training 🏡 Accommodation & Stability 💙 Relationships 🍎 Wellbeing 📢 Voice It's hoped that the research will help to improve the currently limited range of outcomes measures to better understand the full range of successes and difficulties that care leavers experience. The increased outcomes data collected would enable providers to better understand the impact of service delivery, alongside helping to influence government and local authority policies and practice. Do you wish that you could purchase an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and train staff or volunteers in First Aid, CPR and how to use an AED? If so, this mini-grant program could be for you! Please review the grant eligibility criteria below and call Leslie Cheu at 518-720-0006 to discuss your application. Grant applications will be due Tuesday, September 3, 2024. This mini grant program is open to small nonprofit organizations* that: 1. Are headquartered in and serve the residents of Albany or Rensselaer counties of New York State, and 2. Own or lease a building that is open to and provides programs and services to the community, and are 3. Tax exempt according to Section 501 (c)(3) of the IRS Code, and 4. Have an annual operating budget of less than $750,000, and 5. Agree to train two representatives in the American Red Cross Workplace Safety Course. (Please note that funding for the purchase of the AED unit will be released following completion of training by two organization representatives in the American Red Cross Workplace Safety Course. The cost of the training will be covered by the grant.) If your organization is a good fit, you will be invited to apply for funding consideration. * Houses of worship are eligible to apply if tax-exempt according to Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code.

Securing Tomorrow: The Role of Grants in AED Accessibility by Karen Perkins, MD Recently, while staying in an Airbnb nestled in a quaint Tasmanian neighborhood, I was struck by the sight of an outdoor Automated External Defibrillator (AED) enclosure stationed prominently near the driveway of just six houses. I found it reassuring that even in this rural area, there was life saving equipment at the ready. However, it was also a stark reminder of the disparity in access to critical medical equipment, especially in under-resourced areas. The quick deployment of an AED is critical in a cardiac arrest but there exist massive disparities in AED access not only internationally, but in our own backyard. The United States, despite being a global leader in many aspects, has significant inequities in the availability of AEDs, particularly in communities with limited resources. Nonprofit hospitals' CEO retention tactics: Lown: As healthcare CEO compensation continues to rise, nonprofit hospitals are turning to alternative methods to remain competitive, according to an April 24 blog post from the Lown Institute.  http://dlvr.it/T69tSk

"What do nonprofit hospitals reward? An examination of CEO compensation in nonprofit hospitals" (2022) by K. Mulligan, Seema Choksy, Catherine Ishitani, and J. Romley. This paper re-examines the determinants of nonprofit hospital CEO compensation with a focus on various hospital performance measures post-Affordable Care Act (ACA). The findings show mixed evidence on the significance of financial performance and uncompensated care in CEO compensation, with patient satisfaction emerging as a significant factor. The study suggests that nonprofit hospitals balance financial health and their mission in setting CEO incentives, hinting at the need for more transparency in compensation practices【source】(https://rfr.bz/l9ykh9n).

#SafetyNet Hospitals Subsidize Neighboring Not-for-Profit and For-Profit #Hospitals. Public Safety-Net Hospitals are in large cities and are funded by local #taxes to care care of local people... even if they are #uninsured. Examples of Public Safety Net Hospitals include Bellevue Hospital in #NewYorkCity, Jackson Memorial in #Miami, Grady Memorial in #Atlanta and Ben Taub Hospital in #Houston. The new #book "The People's Hospital" by Dr. Ricardo Nuila is an excellent overview of the wonderful care that Ben Taub Hospital and the Harris Health System provide for the people of Houston and the surrounding Harris County. 56% of Ben Taub's patients are uninsured and 1 in 5 of all Houston area hospital stays for the uninsured occur at Ben Taub. Ben Taub has a $1.9B annual budget, of which approximately 46% comes from local taxes. The $875M in taxes that local #residents pay to fund Ben Taub and the Harris Healthcare System #subsidizes the local Not-for-Profit and For-Profit hospitals in that these hospitals do not need to take care of the uninsured Houstonians that Ben Taub does.
