Clyde Martin was a notable figure in the history of golf, particularly during a time when racial segregation was prevalent. In 1939, Clyde Martin achieved a groundbreaking milestone by being named the head professional at the segregated Langston Golf Course in Washington, D.C. At that time, Langston Golf Course served as a designated facility for African-American golfers due to the segregation policies of the era. Despite the challenges of racial segregation, Clyde Martin excelled in his role as head professional, showcasing his skills and expertise in the sport. His appointment at Langston Golf Course was a significant achievement, as it provided opportunities for African-American golfers to access quality instruction and facilities. Troon and its affiliates currently manages the Langston Golf Course, a National Links Trust facility. Established as a designated facility for African-American golfers, Langston became a symbol of progress and equality in the world of golf. It provided a platform for individuals to come together, share their passion for the sport, and contribute to the rich tapestry of the golfing community in the nation's capital. Langston Golf Course's commitment to openness and inclusivity made it a unique and vital institution. It not only offered a place for golf enthusiasts to hone their skills but also became a hub for community engagement and camaraderie. The course's history reflects a resilience against racial barriers, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among its diverse patrons. At the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship, 37 golfers among the 120-player Asia Pacific field are either playing U.S. college golf or have committed to 31 universities 😳. Why? Per the GD article, and also duh, it’s difficult to compete with the elite coaches, competition, practice facilities, education and exposure found in US collegiate golf. There’s also the ability to play courses like Cypress Point, as Lin points out. “I got to U Dub and the people in Seattle, they are just so passionate about sports,” he says. “They support us so much. We have donors that bring us to courses like Cypress Point, Pasatiempo and Pebble Beach, and other really nice courses before tournaments." Who knew a US university education could be a sneaky hack to do something on the cheap! Follow for more sneaky golf tricks and hacks that only cost $80k/year ea. https://lnkd.in/e-UcF_u7

As I stated in a previous post where Greg Norman won £70,000 for his victory at Trump Turnberry in The Open 1986 - The winners checks should return to a normal level so the The R&A can spend more globally promoting the game as they are charged to do - same goes for the United States Golf Association (USGA) & PGAs. It is not any way in their remit to pay pros generational wealth in a single check. I keep hearing the from the pros themselves that they are playing for legacy and trophies not money - The for profits (PGA TOUR, DP World Tour, Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA)) & others that self-fund (LIV Golf, Masters) may increase the purses as much as they like and sponsors will support - but the organizations that grow the game from grass roots support so that the leaderboards are full of flags from around the world should have the support of the professionals to cap the purses - The prestige of the Major shouldn't be contingent of the amount of the winners check. As Martin Slumbers bravely brought attention to the fact the escalation of purses on Golf's most important organizations is unsustainable. In addition, a reduction in the overall men's purse would, like tennis, hopefully allow equal men's and women's payouts in the majors hosted by those organizations as they support both. The Open is the greatest legacy major and doesn't need the largest purse to prove it. #growthegame Augusta National Golf Club #TheMasters PGA of America The PGA The Golf Business
The winner of The 152nd Open at Royal Troon will receive USD 3.1 million in prize money. The Champion Golfer of the Year will receive the highest amount in The Open’s history as it returns to the renowned Ayrshire links for the tenth time. The R&A announced that the total prize fund for The Open, played from 14-21 July 2024, will be USD 17 million, a USD 500,000 increase on 2023. Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, said, “The R&A has a responsibility to strike a balance between maintaining The Open’s position in the global game, providing the funds required for governance and developing amateur and recreational golf in 146 countries internationally. “We have to make choices if we want to continue to build on the significant growth in participation that is essential for golf’s future. “We remain concerned about the impact substantial increases in men’s professional prize money are having on the perception of the sport and its long-term financial sustainability. We are determined to act with the interests of the global game in mind as we pursue our goal of ensuring golf continues to thrive in 50 years’ time.”

Boys (and Girls) in the Boat—Life Lessons from Rowing 58th Head of the Charles Regatta this past weekend had me reflecting since stumbling into novice women’s team at Tech, then Harvard KSG grad boat, and decades of shore line spectating. A few came to mind: 1) All 8 pulling in same direction while facing backwards means trust 2) work with the water not against it—remember slow slide to glide 2) one rower going too fast can slow everyone down 3) but still keep up-catching a crab (oar stuck in water) can mean a black eye (or eye infection!) 4) communicate communicate communicate 5) never too old (89 year old at this years regatta started rowing at 57) 6) small countries (NZ, NE, DN) are outperforming large countries (US)-why? 7) race against your own clock 8) avoid entanglement and collisions (especially under bridges) 9) More accessibility and diversity is needed for this sport to survive 10) always have another power 10 ready Way enough!

Great to see the roll out of #ActiveStart in North Yorkshire. We've worked closely with Active Cumbria who developed the programme, to train our very own trainers (see Liz Burkinshaw below!) and are now well underway in delivering, thanks to specific health inequalities funding . 🤩 50 people have been through the training 🤩 Nearly 40 settings have an Active Start resource 🤩 100% of learners say their knowledge and awareness of how much activity is needed in the early years has increased 🤩 100% of learners say their understanding of how to include more activity and active play into their day has increased 🤩 100% of learners say their confidence, inspiration and motivation has increased. The training has involved so much discussion which is great! Learners have come away with more ideas for their setting and have been able to talk through some of the challenges they face; for which we are working on some follow up webinars/support. More training is being planned for North Yorkshire in March: https://lnkd.in/epp4e64E #EarlyYears #PhysicalActivity #PhysicalLiteracy #ActivePlay #learning #Movement

Believing you can do anything is the key to staying motivated on achieving your goals. We see the attitudes of our kids in our programs change week by week. They go from believing “I can’t play the game” to “I can do this”. Over the summer, we even had some of our kids teach our interns how to hold a golf club and swing. We want to create golf enthusiasts who will play and love the game, and teach others how to play too. Nothing is impossible as long as you put your mind to it. #flgf #finerlifegolf #kidsgolf #golf #motivation #mindset #anythingispossible
