Three adverts for food supplements have been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), after the regulator found they included claims they could “treat” ADHD and autism as “human diseases”. If, like me, you’re taken aback by the UK’s advertising watchdog using this phrase in relation to rulings on matters concerning ADHD and autism, then here’s the context: - Food supplements can’t make claims around preventing/treating/curing “human diseases” under EU regulations - This was brought over into UK law thanks to the eternal taboo that is Brexit and the 2018 EU Withdrawal Act - It doesn’t give a list of conditions or anything that specific, but the ASA says its application to claims about autism and ADHD is its interpretation of the regulations - However, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) published guidance in 2020 which elaborated on the definition of “human diseases” with examples, including an explicit reference to ADHD, as well as covering “all medical conditions major to minor” I get legal documents can be a bit outdated or problematic in its terminology, but is change needed to the language contained in guidance and regulations in this area to reduce misconceptions?

Move your fruit and vegetables out of the bottom drawer and put them in your line of sight. Put your condiments in the bottom drawer - you will go looking for those... This was a key insight shared in my latest talk on nutrition for ADHD focusing on Dopamine. Unfortunately, I can't take the credit for it, this was shared by a participant as advice that has helped her to stop throwing fresh fruit and vegetables away. The ADHD tax can include throwing fresh food away because you forgot it was there, or you lacked the motivation or inspiration to cook it or eat it. We all know the value of fruit and vegetables but frozen is just as good as fresh in some cases. I love to have frozen veg in the freezer it is so versatile and it doesn't go off as quickly as fresh veg. POP TARTS The fruity Pop-Tarts are marketed as being made with “real fruit,” but its ingredients list shows that there’s only 10% of fruit inside each pop tart. The rest comes from toxic ingredients like GMOs, artificial colors and sugar. The other harmful ingredient is TBHQ which is made from petroleum causing cellular dysfunction. 2. FRUIT SNACKS By look at the packaging of fruit snacks, one might think these are healthy. In fact, they even state “Fat Free” and “Made with real fruit”. However, it couldn’t be further from the truth. They are loaded with GMO sugar and contain Red 3 artificial dye. Red 3 is a petroleum products, commonly used food coloring, also known as E127 or Erythrosine. Y 3. M&M’S Did you know that these colorful little candies have been scientifically linked to hyperactivity and diabetes in children. These bright colors are made from dangerous and very toxic artificial dyes. Blue #2, Blue #1, Yellow #5, Red #40 are all petroleum based products that showed to cause brain tumors in lab rats and other abnormal cell development. 4. CHEETOS. Cheetos are loaded with petroleum based ingredients such as methyl benzoate and ethyl methylphenylglicidate. Additionally, the artificial dye Yellow 6 is responsible for that yellow bright color. Yellow 6 comes from petroleum. It’s time to say… Adios toxic foods!
