"The impact of iron deficiency on cognitive functions such as attention, concentration, and memory is well-documented, with potential links to conditions like autism and #ADHD. This study is pioneering in its focus on the association of iron deficiency with childhood #obesity, an area previously unexplored." - College of Contemporary Health (CCH) #childhoodobesity #obesitycare #nutrition #diet

Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Autism – A Systematic Review https://lnkd.in/emcRp8yx Concludes that nutritional supplements might be beneficial for some. Mentions our recent survey of one particular supplement (no endorsement from me) https://lnkd.in/eMWtWWEp but curiously doesn't include our 2-year RCT on the gluten-and casein-free diet for childhood autism https://lnkd.in/e3QbSutH (hint: the diet probably 'works' for some). Ho-hum.

Gut bacteria related to autism? 👀 Doesn't surprise me one bit. Autistic people and other neurodivergent individuals are more often than not challenged in their food intake and tend to have (very) limited diversity in what they eat. This results in lacks of certain nutrients that other people do take in, which inevitably has an effect on their gut health as well as their nutritional status and overall health. Having an autistic child who eats maybe 4 different foods, I always worry about his nutritional status. Where other people can take supplements, he can't, since supplements tend to be pills or thick liquids, often heavily flavoured. I have always wished for someone in the nutritional business to think about this group of people as well and develop more variants of supplements. Not just pills, but also liquids, sprays, powders without flavours and maybe even creams and plasters. This should be technically possible and not so complicated to do and would mean a huge health difference for people who can't take supplements the traditional way. So here's a call for more diversity in supplements. So my son and others also can benefit from good nutrition - and better gut health ❤️ #autism #health #supplements

Three adverts for food supplements have been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), after the regulator found they included claims they could “treat” ADHD and autism as “human diseases”. If, like me, you’re taken aback by the UK’s advertising watchdog using this phrase in relation to rulings on matters concerning ADHD and autism, then here’s the context: - Food supplements can’t make claims around preventing/treating/curing “human diseases” under EU regulations - This was brought over into UK law thanks to the eternal taboo that is Brexit and the 2018 EU Withdrawal Act - It doesn’t give a list of conditions or anything that specific, but the ASA says its application to claims about autism and ADHD is its interpretation of the regulations - However, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) published guidance in 2020 which elaborated on the definition of “human diseases” with examples, including an explicit reference to ADHD, as well as covering “all medical conditions major to minor” I get legal documents can be a bit outdated or problematic in its terminology, but is change needed to the language contained in guidance and regulations in this area to reduce misconceptions?

More and more nutritional therapists are now realising the importance of learning how important it is to work differently with the one in five of us who are neurodivergent. Furthermore, if we do not know how to work with the sensory profile of our clients if they are ND then we may be left wondering what went wrong when they abandon therapy as so many do, more and more people are seeking neuroaffirmative aware practitioners when they seek nutritional therapy and we are finding more and more that it is essential for all people working in this field to have training in it. www.neddetraining.co.uk "I am a Nutritional Therapist and I would recommend this course to any NT, whether or not eating disorders is your speciality. How many times do we find that clients are finding it difficult to follow our suggestions, and then they drop out? It may be because they are neurodivergent and they need a different approach. NEDDE’s training was packed full of information and practical skills and it is already proving invaluable to my practice. I thought the course was brilliant. Move your fruit and vegetables out of the bottom drawer and put them in your line of sight. Put your condiments in the bottom drawer - you will go looking for those... This was a key insight shared in my latest talk on nutrition for ADHD focusing on Dopamine. Unfortunately, I can't take the credit for it, this was shared by a participant as advice that has helped her to stop throwing fresh fruit and vegetables away. The ADHD tax can include throwing fresh food away because you forgot it was there, or you lacked the motivation or inspiration to cook it or eat it. We all know the value of fruit and vegetables but frozen is just as good as fresh in some cases. I love to have frozen veg in the freezer it is so versatile and it doesn't go off as quickly as fresh veg. If you'd like to learn more about how Nutritional Therapy and Lifestyle medicine can be used to support ADHD symptoms then do join my next webinar. I hold them every last Friday of the month at 1pm.
