Last week the World Public Health Nutrition Congress (#Wphn2024) in London, was a great opportunity to engage with a diverse group of experts dedicated to reshaping food systems for a healthier tomorrow. The commitment and innovative ideas shared will undoubtedly pave the way for Healthier People and Healthier Planet. Sharing my top 3 takeaways: - Nourishing and Amplifying Leadership in Public Health Nutrition: Transforming food systems starts with leading from where we stand. Some of the initiatives like the Africa Nutrition Leadership Program (#Anlp) and The Next Gen(D)eration Leadership Collective are setting standards and inspiring change. - Investing in School Meals: Our future consumers are in schools today. Investing in school meals offers a chance not just to cultivate healthy eating habits early on but also transform food systems by focusing on sustainable supply chains. Lessons from successful initiatives in Brazil and India are invaluable. - Harnessing Power: We possess the power to transform food systems (The Power within). By working together (Power With), empowering the most vulnerable (Power To), and addressing negative practices (Power Over), we can create can a healthier, more equitable food system for all. Food is essential for our survival, but millions of people still go to sleep with empty stomachs. For children, failing to meet the nutrients and food necessary during the critical growth period will lead to stunting and wasting, affecting other key developmental milestones, including cognitive ones. On the other hand, unhealthy diets can lead to obesity and other health problems. 🌱Last Tuesday, IDF Europe held a webinar together with APDP Diabetes and Fédération Française des Diabétiques (FFD), presenting the final results of the Healthy Food Healthy Planet supported project: Eat Better, Live Better. 🥑 Rogerio Ribeiro from APDP showcased the project’s results which showed that greater inclusion of plant-based foods in diets holds clear benefits for people living with type 2 diabetes and others. 📈 Marie-Laure Mourre from the FFD talked about the role of #socialmarketing to support behavioural changes and how different approaches might be necessary depending on the level of health literacy and health empowerment of audiences. Lisandra Ribeiro took behaviour change from theory to practice by showing that culinary workshops like those done as part of the project can increase health literacy and uptake of #plantbased diets. 🍏Claire Chambrier from the French Agency for Research and Information on Fruit and Vegetables Aprifel emphasised the value of co-production and collaboration in increasing #healthliteracy. 👩⚕️Sofia Rodrigo Rodrigues from APDP provided the perspective of a healthcare professional and talked about the importance of promoting a plant-based food diet that aligns with cultural cuisines. Marie Laure Ludemiluna from AFD 13 gave her perspective as a person living with #diabetes who also changed her diet to being predominantly plant-based, highlighting the challenges of such a transition, such as the potential over-reliance on processed plant-based food. ⚖️Rafael Pinto reflected on the changes needed in the EU political and legislative sphere to support healthier diets, such as funding schemes, carbon pricing and fair fiscal policies.   Elisabeth Dupont from IDF Europe showcased the urgency to act on diabetes to lower the risk of life-altering complications. I cannot express how much I enjoyed moderating this panel on scaling food systems interventions, with a focus on the private sector. A big thank you to Jenny Walton, Sneha Kanneganti, and Meera Shekar and a big congratulations to the #ScallingComminityofPractice for their successful Annual Forum. I encourage you all to check out their great work. For those who need a TLDR version of the webinar: Speakers advocated for a united approach among governments, businesses, and NGOs to transform food systems into sustainable, health-centric networks. They argued that common goals already exist, but the language and collaborative approaches necessary to facilitate partnership may be lacking. Nonetheless, each speaker provided examples of the creation of shared values and common purpose. Together, they proposed a shift towards cooperative engagement as a potential catalyst for redefining global nutrition strategies, turning them into a collective journey aimed at achieving better health outcomes for millions worldwide. https://lnkd.in/ecTpTXpf

Regional health inequalities are well-documented with statistics showing there is a gap of 19 years for healthy life expectancy between the lowest and highest socioeconomic groups. UK Research and Innovation has funding available to foster a better understanding of the causes of dietary health inequalities in the UK food system and deliver place-based, solution-focused interventions to improve equity and health. Time to introspect : A generation grapples with a detrimental trio: 1. misguided regulations, 2. uninformed parenting, and 3. the negative facets of food capitalism. Our tendency to applaud technological solutions often masks a flawed system that creates problems merely to showcase these marvels in treating symptoms. It's a moment for introspection in a society proudly announcing the building 5-star hospitals daily, yet failing to prioritize prevention. This circular economy, ignorantly destroying itself and life's purpose, deserves reconsideration. 😇 It's time to break free from the shackles of a colonialized capitalism, liberating humanity from its enslavement. On January 25, 2024, the 47th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University (INMU), INMU hosted the 3rd Professor Aree Valyasevi Memorial Lecture. This lecture series commemorates the legacy of INMU’s Founding Director, Professor Aree Valyasevi, whose internationally-recognized career in research and advocacy served as a cornerstone of Thailand's integrated community-based nutrition programs that led to dramatic reductions in malnutrition and propelled Thailand's economic and social development since the 1980s. The lecture was presented virtually by Dr. Jessica Fanzo, Professor of Climate and Director of the Food For Humanity Initiative at the Columbia Climate School, and was entitled “Ensuring Access to Healthy Diets from Sustainable Food Systems for Everyone: Exploring The Realities, Trade-Offs, And Hopes Amid A Changing World And Climate”. Professor Fanzo discussed recent research on global food systems and security in the context of ever increasingly complex planetary and political threats and opportunities, and how this research informs global thinking, governance, and strategies toward enabling healthy and sustainable diets and nutrition for the future of humanity. Professor Fanzo also discussed findings of a landmark report on food systems monitoring and transformation, published last December, that she co-led as part of the Food Systems Countdown Initiative (https://lnkd.in/d7kxTG7F).
