I’ve always believed meals are at the heart of life in nursing homes… but why not, right? The kitchen, restaraunts and food are at the heart of many (most) lives - a source of joy, spontaneity, celebration.
All nursing homes under 50 beds should run a restaurant style meal service. High quality. Low waste. Cost neutral (or close). Through the roof satisfaction.
Too often when this style is proposed, people stammer…but regulation won’t allow it.
Yes, regulations are a hinderance** here, but there are workarounds. With the right menus, products, risk-benefits assessments and a creative kick ass dietician it is workable - and necessary. And residents will love you for it. Oh, and you just might have better kitchen staff retention too.
** Dietery regulations (not including diet consistencies) in nursing homes are too restrictive and just plain stupid. Let residents choose. I dare anyone to try putting me on a low fat, low sodium diet - no way you’re taking away my cheese and bacon. Some diets are necessary of course to control end stage conditions, but do we really want to hold all residents to the antiquated ideas of the food pyramid.
