Case of the Week A 60-year-old male with a complex ankle trauma faced an uncertain path to recovery due to limited insights from his CT scans alone. To better understand the injury and plan the surgery, the surgeon turned to Axial3D for a 3D printed model of the fracture. 3DLoom in Action 👨⚕️ A 38 y.o. female patient experiencing sporadic stomach aches was diagnosed with a duodenal cyst and was scheduled to undergo surgery in order to have it removed. For the preoperative planning of the procedure, our team created and printed this 3D model of the patient’s unique anatomy. However, once made, this model clearly showed the ratio of the cyst (the green part of the model) with the surrounding blood vessels, making the surgical team realize that removing the cyst through surgery is too risky due to its closeness to the inferior vena cava (a vein that carries blood into the right atrium of the heart). Because of this, the surgical team made a decision that the patient’s condition should be managed differently and not through surgery. 3DLoom in Action 👨🔬 A case of a 23 year old patient who suffered a complex tibial plateau fracture, necessitating a meticulous reconstruction due to the tibial plateau being a part of the knee joint. Recognized as one of the most intricate fractures to manage, a 3D model was commissioned for enhanced preoperative planning. The surgical team utilized the 3D printed model to meticulously plan the reconstruction before the actual procedure. This strategic approach streamlined the operation, resulting in a notable reduction in surgical time. The surgery was successfully completed in just 2 hours, representing a significant advancement compared to the typical duration for similar procedures (typically ranging around 4 hours). Six months post-operation, the patient has achieved full range of motion and regained the ability to walk without experiencing any residual pain.
