NPR's Planet Money explored the importance of electricity transmission competition to upgrading the U.S. electricity grid but one thing their reporting missed was the extent of the cost savings provided by electricity transmission competition. The Brattle Report on transmission competition showed that savings as great as 40% can be achieved through competitive bidding and given the more than $2 trillion in transmission spending we will need, this yields savings over $800 billion for consumers. EIA reports record home electricity bills of $173 this summer. We need competition to keep rates down. Competitive bidding provides accountability in the form of cost caps, and constraints on the return on equity to incentivize efficiency and innovation. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dbVStMPv

The Central Electricity Authority has released a key transmission planning study – the draft National Electricity Plan for Transmission – which outlines the perspective transmission network plan for the country. It estimates that 123,577 ckt. km of #transmission lines and 710,940 MVA of transformation capacity (at 220 kV and above voltage levels) need to be added during the period 2022-27. Overall, the expansion and strengthening of transmission systems will entail an estimated investment of Rs 4.75 trillion during 2022-27. More here: https://lnkd.in/g5uTmTNN

Interesting blog post by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that lays out why more transmission will benefit the average customer> The main benefits mof expanded #transmission access: 1) enables delivery of lower-cost electricity to more customers, 2) shorter power outages and 3) expanded access to lower-cost electricity for more people.

Open Access Regulations is out for review! This is an important piece of regulation that opens the way for open access to the transmission system, wheeling of electricity, and an ancillary services market. This when well designed will be a major shift in the electricity market. Please review.

Despite a recent break from load-shedding, investing in solar and backup power remains wise due to Eskom’s unstable performance and frequent municipal power outages. Aging infrastructure, cable theft, and rising electricity prices underscore the need for reliable, self-generated power solutions to ensure consistent electricity access. https://bit.ly/4baqhmR

50 different states, 50 different rules. Until there is a consistent set of rules for building new, long distance transmission lines, the U.S. will remain a patchwork of local and regional grids that are not interconnected. Fixing this seems implausible. https://lnkd.in/gJZmxV-J
