Social Media, Email Marketing, and Web Manager for Higher Education at UMSL Office of Inclusive Postsecondary Education
A recently published paper by Think College Technical Assistance Coordinator Chelsea VanHorn Stinnett, PhD and #ABLESouthCarolina President and CEO #KimberlyTissotMSW, recalled a mile marker in history when a group of quadriplegic students housed in Cowell Hospital at the University of California at Berkley established early advocacy for independent living (IL). In coming together, these students discovered similarities in personal experiences, which fueled their desire for social inclusion. Today, it is mandated that privately-run, non-profit Centers for Independent Living (CIL) be managed by people with disabilities. These CILs "exist to ensure people with disabilities have the support and services to live meaningfully active lives in their communities," a quote from the Stinnett-Tissot article read. It suggested that Inclusive Post Secondary Education (IPSE) programs could benefit from a partnership with CILs. Stinnett added, “Centers for Independent Living can provide critical disability mentorship for college students. They are an under-utilized resource in inclusive postsecondary education, when many of their staff have experienced all levels of higher education as disabled students. Their lived experience is invaluable.” Follow this link to read the article, "Inclusive Post Secondary Education and Centers for Independent Living: A Partnership Worth Pursuing": https://lnkd.in/gfHfrM3C #InclusivePostSecondaryEducation #IPSE #CentersForIndependentLiving #CIL #APartnershipWorthPursuing #DisabilityRights #OfficeOfInclusivePostsecondaryEducation #OIPE #UniversityofMissouriStLouis

True progress isn’t found in endless aid, but in fostering independence and dignity. When we shift from temporary fixes to sustainable solutions, we create the conditions for communities to flourish on their own. Lasting change begins when aid becomes a catalyst for self-sufficiency. 🌍 #SocialGoodByDesign #EmpowerCommunities
