Happy Rooibos Day! Have a little read in this post for some interesting facts, about the Champagne of Africa.
It's #RooibosDay ! Which honours a crucial element of our business, but also our domestic economy. To celebrate, we thought it best to offer some interesting insights to what rooibos entails. Redbush tea, scientifically known as aspalathis linearis, is a tisane bush species native to Western Cape and Northern Cape, belonging to the Cederberg region. 16 regions within the Western and Northern Cape of South Africa are the only regions where Rooibos can be grown and be called 'Rooibos Tea', which our international supporters often refer to as the 'Champagne of Africa'. Our Carmién Rooibos tea farms are spread across these areas and together with our long-term contracted producers, we are ensured to obtain Rooibos from all the different specified regions. To this, we celebrate the delight that is nurturing a local product!

In the current season, South Africa's table grape exports have seen significant growth, with the South African Table Grape Industry (SATI ) reporting a 19% year-on-year increase in exports. This boost can be attributed to the early end of production compared to the previous year, with over three-quarters of the season's packaging completed by week 6. The delayed Chinese New Year led to a higher influx of South African table grapes into the Chinese market early in the year, causing some Peruvian grapes to divert to other Southeast Asian markets. 🍇 To manage logistical pressures, South Africa has employed a diversified export strategy, including diverting shipments from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and utilizing conventional vessels for export. Despite challenges, key regions like the Northern Province and the Olifants River region have exceeded production expectations, with favorable weather conditions contributing to grape quality. Additionally, regions like the Berg River and Hex River have also seen successful seasons, with high-quality varieties driving positive market responses. https://lnkd.in/daRh4cc3 #SouthAfrica #TableGrapes #ExportGrowth #SATI #AgriculturalExports

Mansas Whisky is a new organic, earthy & rich bourbon-style, African whisky, made with African maize, on African soil. Created by Spearhead Spirits. We created Mansas because the world of Whisky, was not complete without the taste of Africa. The story of Mansas Whisky dates back 5,000 years to the ancient African Kingdom of Kush where sorghum flourished as a core ingredient in the production of beer. Sorghum’s significance transcended tribes to become one of the most important cereals in Africa and is a core ingredient in our Whisky today. However at the heart of Mansas Whisky is yellow maize, Africa’s largest crop and the hero of our mash bill. Not only does yellow maize drive Mansas' rich bourbon-esq flavour, it brings with it a rich African tradition. Literally. Yellow maize was one of the many grains traded by Mansa Musa, a man who is believed to be the richest man that ever lived and the inspiration behind our latest premium African spirit. This is a new whisky, from the new world, with flavour fit for an emperor and we can't wait for you to try it! #Africa #Whisky #Agriculture #Spirits

It's been marvelous to have a serendipitous conversation with David Smith at the old Fielden Whisky distillery in Oxford over 2 years ago transform into a collaborative partnership. Here's a few reasons why I'm so, so chuffed about having Dave on our side: 1. Experience Dave brings over 26 years of brand-building and leadership experience in just the alcobev space (to say nothing of his forays into other industries). He loves rum as a category, and led the legendary brand Cockspur rum through its period of 900% growth in the 2000s. We're a young brand that wants to go very far: Dave's done it before. 2. Sustainability & African Provenance: Dave gets it. Local value addition, building deep relationships with farming communities, valorizing indigenous ingredients, decolonizing taste. In some spaces, I have to do a lot of legwork to explain what we do and why it's important. In our first ever conversation, Dave and I were already comparing notes on the expansion of sugarcane farming in Mozambique. From his own experience leading the revolutionary English Whisky, Fielden, Dave is intimately familiar with the importance of bringing thoughtful environmentalism to spirits. 3. Dave is kind, steady and patient. IMIZI is quite literally unprecedented: we're making rum in a place that has never made it, we're using botanicals that have never been used before. Quite simply, no one like us exists. Whilst there exists pressure to chase growth and speed at all costs, Dave's been a remarkable reservoir of patience because he understands the importance of doing things the right way. He frequently reminds me "Every overnight success is 10 years in the making". Having him as an interlocutor has been salutary for us. Looking forward to continuing our work together, friend!
I am delighted to announce that I have taken up a Board Advisory position with IMIZI Forest Rum from Rwanda. IMIZI sources sugarcane directly from local farmers, paying them a significant multiple to the price that they would otherwise receive from a commodity broker. IMIZI uses locally sourced herbs and delivers a wonderful vanilla-centric nose & a creamy yet peppery taste. Quite delicious. If you want to know more, please reach out. Rohan, 🙏 for having me on board & I look forward to the exciting journey ahead!
