The population experiencing mental ill health is rising, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sunderland City Council commissioned us to evaluate nine projects they were running to improve the provision of mental health support in the city. We used a mixed methods approach to assess the process and impacts delivered. We outlined gaps in provision, areas for improvement and recommendations for future mental health provision in the city. This work has contributed to improving health outcomes and reducing persistent health inequalities. Over the past century, U.S. attitudes toward mental health have evolved from stigma and institutionalization to increased awareness and community-based care. This shift in attitude is due to advocacy, legislation, and technology, which have played crucial roles in destigmatizing mental illness and integrating mental health into overall well-being. Despite progress, access to care remains a challenge, emphasizing the need for continued advocacy and robust support systems. Short staffed behavioral health organizations are such stressful places to work! The staffing crisis in behavioral health is such a downward spiral. While this article did highlight the depressing state of Oregon's behavioral health labor pool, it did also mention some great programs already underway to address the issue. "Oregon’s mental health clinics can’t find anyone to fill a quarter of their jobs. Six Oregon counties didn’t have a single psychologist last year. Patients, especially people of color, children and rural residents, face severe challenges getting into therapy or finding help for addiction or conditions like eating disorders. 4moIt would be nice for nearby Ontario County to have some new funding for persons living with mental health and substance use challenges. The options to receive care management support in Ontario County have diminished greatly. I go to a clinic in Rochester for care management (since March 2023).
