One crucial element for successful establishment of native landscapes is long-term maintenance, and this requires champions on the ownership side who ensure that proper techniques for native landscape establishment are followed. Stewardship of native landscapes by land owners and education programs for maintenance teams are critical, as are clearly defined metrics for the long-termsuccess. This photo, taken during a warranty walk at our project site near Bend, Oregon restored to sagebrush steppe in Oregon, shows desired plants next to a handful of invasive weed species. We worked with Site Facilities Operations staff upon project turnover to help identify undesirable species and facilitate successful maintenance of established seeding. With time, native plants will out-compete weeds and maintenance will reduce with every passing year, providing the client with a beautiful landscape that saves cost and provides an important ecological function. #O2design #landscapearchitecture #datacenterdesign #ecologicalrestoration #nativeplants #nursery #biomes #sustainability #sustainabledesign #ecoregions #climatechange #biophilic

Planning on developing a site? Proper planning is critical when developing a site with trees either on or near it. Trees are valuable assets, but they can also pose significant constraints if not properly considered. This is where a BS5837 tree survey becomes essential. By identifying the constraints posed by trees, such as root protection areas and canopy spreads, the survey helps the design team make informed decisions and optimise the use of the site. In addition, Arboricultural Impact Reports (AIR) play a key role in the planning process. Required by local planning authorities (LPA), these reports assess the potential impact of the final design on the trees and vice versa, ensuring any negative effects are mitigated early on. At Brown Bear Tree Care Ltd, we provide comprehensive tree surveys and impact reports to help streamline the planning process and ensure a successful, tree conscious development. #treesurvey #planninganddevelopment #arboriculture

Majestic trees are a vital part of our environment. They provide shade, clean our air, and offer a home to countless species. Yet, in the face of development, these giants often face the cruel axe. While removal is sometimes necessary, shouldn't we explore all options before resorting to felling a healthy tree? Here's why prioritizing tree relocation over removal should be the new standard: Preserving Established Ecosystems: Mature trees have complex root systems that support healthy soil and local wildlife. Relocating them, while challenging, can minimize ecological disruption. Long-Term Sustainability: Transplanted trees can continue to provide environmental benefits for decades to come, unlike newly planted saplings that take years to mature. Enhancing Property Value: Mature trees add significant aesthetic and financial value to a property. Relocation allows developers to retain this value while accommodating new structures. Relocation Challenges and Solutions: Tree relocation is a complex process, but advancements in technology and arboriculture are making it more feasible. Specialized equipment and meticulous planning can significantly increase success rates. Taking Action: Developers & Contractors: Explore relocation as a viable option. Partner with qualified arborists who can assess tree health and develop relocation plans. Policymakers: Encourage legislation that incentivizes tree relocation through tax breaks or streamlined permitting processes. Consumers: Support developers who prioritize sustainable practices and hold them accountable for preserving our urban forests. Let's move beyond the "cut-and-build" mentality. By prioritizing tree relocation, we can create thriving communities that nurture both nature and progress. #SustainableDevelopment #TreeRelocation #UrbanForestry #EnvironmentalResponsibility #SaveTheTrees

The 4 Returns Framework: A Guide to Holistic Landscape Restoration After more than a decade of working on holistic landscape restoration with partners all over the world, we announces the release of our new guidebook, “The 4 Returns Framework: A Guide to Holistic Landscape Restoration”, a one-stop-shop for holistic landscape restoration best practices and implementation tips. Faced with the giant threat of landscape degradation worldwide, it’s easy to feel small. Faced with the long term and energy-intense task of holistic restoration, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Faced with the complex web of – sometimes competing- stakeholder interests, it’s easy to feel alone. But we can do this, we can restore landscapes – as long as we’re guided by facts and not by myths. At 16:30 CEST on Tuesday 25 June, we will be hosting a live Zoom webinar featuring three practitioners who are on the frontlines of landscape restoration, in conversation with experts – each busting a myth. This event is for anyone who is in the first few years of their landscape restoration process – you could be interested in setting up a landscape partnership in the near future – or you could already be on your restoration journey. If you keep running into challenges, sometimes struggle to figure out myth from reality – or would simply like some advice, solidarity and support – then this webinar is for you. https://lnkd.in/euwtc7h6 #generationrestoration #restoration #ecosystems #biodiversity #landscapes #regeneration #ecology #agriculture #livestock #regenerativeagriculture #climatechange #forests #water #soil #farmers #conservation #4returns Wetlands International IUCN CEM- Forest Ecosystems Landscape Finance Lab 1000 Landscapes For 1 Billion People CGIAR FAO

It's time to introduce some individual species of trees and talk about the biodiversity benefits they can bring to different landscapes if planted and cared for correctly. We will introduce some less common species later, but let's start with some that you are likely to bump into and will be confident identifying once you know the leaf pattern! First up, the native field maple, Acer campestre. The five-lobed leaf and winged seeds (tinged pink when mature) make this tree easy to spot in any season. It has been shown to have moderate tolerance to pollution and salt; which is why it is sometimes recommended for use in transport corridors. Its dense canopy supports a range of caterpillars, aphids, ladybirds, hoverflies, bees and birds. According to The Woodland Trust's longstanding historical record, Nature's Calender, the buds of this tree are just starting to burst - so keep your eye out for it in the coming months! Based on a tried and tested design principle innovated by the Vincent Wildlife Trust, our Pine Marten den is suitable both for resting/sleeping martens and also as a breeding den. Unlike some other designs, this structure is relatively light whilst maintaining internal structural integrity. Pine martens are particularly sensitive to sound disturbance and the thermal qualities of their dens. The 'all timber' internal box structure ensures that a resting marten remains warm and that sound transfer through the box walls is kept to a minimum. Inspection / internal servicing is achieved through the front wall which can be released by removing the two bolts at the base and allowed to slide down. The internal wooden den section remains intact even when the front wall is lowered, ensuring no nesting material is lost during inspection. The recycled farm plastic protective sheet on the roof (in woodland green) ensures maximum protection from rain and an ideal spot upon which martens may choose to leave scat (a useful monitoring sign). Whats more the premium materials used in construction of this and othe products in the range mean we can offer a 20-year structural guarantee The den is held in place using wire or rope through holes in the vertical spacer batons and around the tree to which the box is secured. Vertical batons ensure minimal sway of the box in strong winds. Boxes should be sited approximately 4 metres from the ground on suitably sized trees or poles. The message we convey in this technical report is central to forest landscape restoration #FLR endeavors, whether approached from top-down or bottom-up.
Forest landscape restoration is about people. It is people who carry out restoration, people take decisions around restoration, people use restoration to their advantage. Human history affects restoration. Rules that affect how restoration is implemented take place in the human system. Relations between those people with less power and those with more power affect the outcomes of restoration. And restoration outcomes impact on people. These are just some of the many human dimensions of forest landscape restoration explored in this report "Human dimensions of forest landscape restoration" which is intended to support both practitioners and policymakers. #GenerationRestoration #UNdecaderestoration https://lnkd.in/eSDMhYHu

I am very glad to finally announce the publication of our latest article in the Journal of the American Planning Association: "Beyond the Golden Shovel: Recommendations for a Successful Urban Tree Planting Initiative." Urban tree planting initiatives (TPIs) are now widely acknowledged as essential for making our cities more livable and sustainable. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the need for trees and greenery to address climate change and many other urban challenges. Through enhanced knowledge and dissemination, we can equip managers, planners, and politicians with the tools they need to green our cities. However, it is crucial that we maintain our momentum, as numerous challenges remain and many stakeholders still need to be engaged to truly create green cities and sustainable urban forests. In our article, we delve into the comprehensive work required for successful TPIs. We provide recommendations for the pre-planting, installation, and post-planting phases, emphasizing the importance of securing adequate funding, adopting place-based landscape design, engaging communities, following arboricultural best practices, and continuously evaluating performance. The significance of this publication lies in its potential to influence how urban tree planting initiatives are planned and executed globally. By drawing from our combined experience and extensive research, we aim to help cities not only meet but exceed their urban greening goals. The article is of course free to download and read via: https://lnkd.in/dwyHGkKZ #UrbanForestry #GreenInfrastructure #UrbanPlanning
