🙌🏼 finally someone is listening!!! I find it absurd that professionals extensively trained in musculoskeletal injury diagnosis and treatment are blocked from being able to request scans or refer to the next stage of intervention…yet GP’s, although doctors, can spend their whole careers not revisiting any MSK study if that is not their area of interest, and maintain the power to investigate. I have a long list of patients who have… 1. been scanned too prematurely for symptoms of an injury we could have diagnosed in one Physio consult. 2. been sent for the wrong type of imaging e.g. an X-Ray that came back clear so they were referred to a physio…for symptoms that were representative of a muscular/tendinous injury the whole time, resulting in the patient having to pay more money to see a physio to learn that it’s not what we needed, to then pay more to be sent back to the GP to get another referral, and pay more again to get the MRI that actually shows us the diagnosis we were searching for in the first place. 3. Received a scan result of an injury that can be managed with physio, but instead are referred immediately to an orthopaedic surgeon (and the patient pays for that in both money and anxiety). I also don’t understand why physios are conducting workers comp injury rehabilitation, functionally assessing patients, progressing their capacity, educating on pain management & activity modification, yet the approved return to work certificate of capacity needs to come from the GP, and is often just based on the report from the Physio…again…extra time for us to write reports, extra costs to insurance companies to pay for those reports and the additional GP consults, more appointments for the injured worker to attend during a time of discomfort and stress, and a GP consult time taken up that could have otherwise been used by a patient needing important medical attention & prescriptions. It makes no sense to me. At all. Are we not here to help people? Why is the process of finding answers and getting help so much harder, timely and costly than it needs to be? Knowledge and the practical understanding of that knowledge takes many, many years to master. Collective and collaborative learning is an excellent path towards a deeper understanding of Musculoskeletal and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Medicine especially when being applied to Dance and Sports.
