As I shared in the newsletter for Shelburne Business & Professional Association this week: Happy Valentine’s Day! Banking is romantic, right? The Federal Reserve tracks the number of bank branches across the nation. It hit a recent peak in 2009, with 36 banks per 100,000 residents. It’s declined steadily since then, to 30 per 100,000 in 2019. NBER tracks the density a different way but also shows a decline: there were about 99,000 bank branches in 2009 and 79,000 in 2022. But lack of access to banking has always been a problem, especially for low-income families. Nationally in 2021, FDIC reports that 4.5% of households were “unbanked.” It’s about 3% in Vermont. In our small state, some the nation’s large banks don’t have a presence. Instead we benefit from a strong network of smaller banks and credit unions.

Redemption Holding Company, a Black-led investment group, is planning to acquire Utah-based Holladay Bank & Trust. If the acquisition goes through, the bank would become not only Black-owned, but also the only Minority Depository Institution (MDI) west of Texas. The goal is to partner with other MDIs and create a full-service banking platform that serves consumers and business owners, offering lending products like mortgages and loans. Bell believes the state is favorable as far as bank regulations go, making it an ideal location. This acquisition could change the game for Black fintechs, such as Ready Life, that require banks to operate, but there aren't many Black-owned banks available. Redemption Bank’s target is working-class Black Americans. They want to work with those looking for access to credit to grow their businesses and create jobs in their communities. What are your views on this acquisition? Reaching a 153rd anniversary doesn’t come without milestones along the way. One particularly special one occurred in 1945, our 75th year of operation in Santa Fe, NM. As editorialized by the Santa Fe New Mexican, the first 75 years of the bank didn’t come without obstacles to navigate. During this time period, the bank functioned through three wars, navigated multiple financial crises, and survived as many businesses in the region struggled. First National 1870's first 75 years are something to be proud of and laid the foundation for what was to come. Explore more of our history on our “Beyond 1870” section that details the bank’s growth and impact in New Mexico over the last 153 years. https://trst.in/IECspZ (Photo credit: Santa Fe New Mexican)

Today, I'd like to highlight two phenomenal people: Kevin Cohee is the Chairman and CEO of OneUnited Bank, and Teri Williams is the President and Chief Operations Officer. OneUnited Bank is the nation’s largest Black-owned bank, the first Black-owned digital bank, and award-winning CDFI with branches in Boston, Los Angeles, and Miami. OneUnited Bank is really Black-owned. Our majority owners are our Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Cohee, and our President & Chief Operating Officer, Teri Williams. All of the board of directors and management team, the majority of which are African American, also own shares in OneUnited Bank. While OneUnited Bank is FDIC insured, OneUnited Bank is a privately owned, Black-owned bank. OneUnited Bank is instrumental in closing the Black wealth gap. According to the FDIC MDI Research Study 2001-2013, minority depository institutions (MDIs) (such as OneUnited) are significantly more likely to lend in low to moderate-income (LMI) communities and to minority borrowers than non-MDIs. The FDIC study states, “African American MDIs appear to be particularly successful in their mission of serving African American borrowers.” The study shows that the share of home loans made to Black borrowers in 2011 was 67 percent for Black banks, compared to less than 1 percent for other community banks that year. All funds deposited in OneUnited Bank are used for loans. Want to find out more?
