Is a Human Resources Diploma the Key to My Career Change? Answers: https://lnkd.in/gci4hjta #CareerChange #HRManagement #SocialWork Hey everyone! 🌟 I’m a 24-year-old woman who graduated with a degree in social work back in 2022. Since then, I've dipped my toes into the field with some support work and employment services but, honestly, it hasn't sparked much joy for me. 🙁 While I appreciate the importance of this work, I can’t help but feel a bit lost in my motivation to dig deeper and find something that truly resonates. Recently, I’ve been toying with the idea of making a big transition. I'm considering going back to school for a Human Resources Management Diploma. There are some solid programs in Metro Vancouver that are catching my eye! 🚀 I’d love to chat with HR professionals out there about their experiences! What makes the profession rewarding? Are there challenges you face? I imagine a lot of people might think of HR as just paperwork and policies, but is it more dynamic than that? Let's break it down! What’s great about HR? ✨ - You get to help shape company culture and empower employees. - Every day is different, with new challenges and oppo...

HR is probably the only industry where people don't say, "When I grow up, I want to work in HR." 🌟 Back in university, I always had part-time retail jobs. HR seemed like a distant entity, only appearing to deal with mistakes. I never really understood their role. I never chose to work in HR; it almost chose me. One day, I was offered a temporary role as an HR Admin to help with recruitment and right-to-work checks. It paid the same as retail but meant sitting in an office. I thought it was just a detour, but it turned into a new path. The first few days were a whirlwind. Learning policies, procedures, and recruitment was challenging but rewarding. Weeks turned into months, and I was drawn deeper into HR. I saw it as more than just enforcing rules; it was about supporting employees, shaping culture, and driving success. Eventually, I left my master’s program in Educational Development & Globalisation for the rollercoaster that is HR. 🎢 Every day brought new challenges and opportunities to grow. I thrived on the unpredictability and constant need to adapt. Looking back, it’s been an incredible journey. I’ve gone from someone who barely knew what HR was to someone who lives and breathes it. HR plays a vital role in any organization, and I’m proud to be a part of it. 💼❤️ Here’s to the unexpected paths that lead us to where we belong! 🛤️✨ #HRJourney #UnexpectedPaths #CareerGrowth #UniversityDays #HRLife

Who is an Human Resources Manager? What comes to your mind when you hear 'Human Resource Manager'? A human resources (HR) manager is someone who oversees the administrative and organizational functions of a company or business. The manager usually heads the HR department, and they play an important role as a bridge between management and employees. HR managers work in nearly every industry. As long as a company has employees, an HR manager is typically needed to oversee hiring, training, and the organization and development of the company culture. They also ensure that employees are happy and well-supported to do their job well. Some of the functions or roles of human resources managers in an organization include: 🔷 Human resource planning. 🔷Job analysis and job design. 🔷Recruitment and selection. 🔷Performance management. 🔷Training and development. 🔷Industrial relations. 🔷Compensation and benefit management. The role of a human resources manager largely depend on the size of the company. In some smaller companies, you may serve as an HR generalist, overseeing the entire scope of human resources. In other companies, there may be more than one HR manager in the human resources department, each with their own specialty. For example, an organisation's HR department might have other sections headed by an HR manager. The sections could be, Industrial relations; performance management; recruitment, training and posting; record and registry; welfare; data management etc. I hope with this, when you hear someone (probably a friend, stranger or a random person) talking about the HR department in their organisation it won't sound strange to you and you also know what they do there. Be bold enough to teach a friend what you have learnt today🙂. Does a degree in any qualification trump hands-on experience? This is a question that has been on my mind for over 20 years. Previously as an Employee Relations specialist within HR, I was once tasked with setting up a centre of excellence, which involved recruiting staff for the team. I interviewed candidates with various levels of CIPD qualifications, some with degrees, and some with over 20 years of experience in ER. However, I was not allowed to appoint anyone without a degree, not a HR related degree, but any degree. The Director of HR believed that a candidate with a degree in archaeology and 5 years of experience was better than a candidate with no degree but 20 years of hands-on experience. I could never understand this rationale. Fast forward 20 years, and I still believe that hands-on experience is just as valuable, if not more so, than a degree in any field. As someone with 30 years of experience, fellowship of the CIPD, and two masters in HR-related subjects, I can attest to the importance of continuous learning. However, I also know that real-world experience is invaluable. So, what do you think? Does a degree hold more weight than hands-on experience? Share your thoughts in the comments below. #experiencevsdegree #HR #continuouslearning

Happy International HR Day! 🥳 In 2019, the European Association for People Management established “International HR Day” to highlight the significant value HR professionals bring to organizations and to raise awareness about the evolving demands and critical role of HR in today's dynamic work environment. Reflecting on my HR journey, I remember my college days filled with lots of student jobs as a tutor, tour guide, fundraiser, and international office / marketing specialist. Two days before graduation, I received my first official job offer as an HR admin assistant back home. At first, I thought, how fun! I get to do a little bit of everything. But "fun" wouldn’t be the word I’d use to describe my journey— instead.. it has been transformative. In that role, I encountered real and high-level issues and realized how, as an HR assistant, I could support everyone from the most junior to the most executive person in the company. It’s been challenging in the best ways. We don’t just handle compensation, benefits, or process paperwork; we support the most complex issues that affect people in their jobs, one of the pillars of their lives. 7+ years and 5 roles later.. I can say my HR journey has been eye-opening, rewarding, and tough, but it also fills me with hope. Hope that we can all achieve a level of empowerment and enablement, and that we can use technology to bring us closer (yes, closer, not farther) to people. So cheers to us! To championing ethical tech and AI integration, redefining future workplaces, living in excellence, and continuing to invest in skills and education. May the best years in HR be ahead of us☀️ #HR #HumanResources #InternationalHRDay

Are you hiring for a Junior HR role and looking to enhance the diversity of experience within your team? I have been mentoring Brigitte Kelleher over the last few months as she transitions out of teaching into the People & Culture/HR space. I have learnt a lot about the intersection of skills between teaching and HR. Both roles focus on how to create positive experiences, a culture of both learning and doing, enabling growth mindsets and understanding the individual needs of so many people. Diversifying our teams and ways of working means looking at bringing on people who come from different backgrounds and experiences. I have hired many people and can recognise very quickly when people have the tenacity, capability and skills to hit the ground running in a new role. I can see this in Brigitte Kelleher and I have been lucky enough to learn so much from her over the last few months. Career changes are scary and daunting and also an extremely brave move to make; anyone who can take a leap should be celebrated. The ability to drive change and be adaptable are important skills in HR. #hiring #humanresources #peopleandculture #careerchange
