Today, Incredible Health released our 2024 State of US Nursing Report, with upcoming coverage from Bloomberg, Fierce Healthcare, Modern Healthcare, Becker's Healthcare, ABC News and more. Now in it's 5th year, we analyzed data from the 1 million US nurses on the Incredible Health platform, and surveyed over 3000 nurses, to better understand top challenges nurses face across the country. If your nursing churn rate is at or above 18% we should talk. When we speak to leadership teams we often hear very different turnover rationale than their own nurses cite in our exit interviews. Where leadership teams are often lead believe that nurses leave for higher pay, nurses state that unsafe labor loads/ understaffing, and unsupportive or toxic middle management are a primary culprit. We predict that the cost of not prioritizing systems and processes that target safe ratios and supportive culture- will continue to drive up the cost of care delivery as a large number of direct care nurses are set to age out of bedside care. A smaller pool of available staff will further stress safe labor loads and test the staying power of organizations that haven't prioritized a culture of treating nurses like the human capital and the right arm of healthcare delivery that they are. https://lnkd.in/e54AxWg5

The ongoing nursing shortage has thrust our healthcare system into a predicament that affects us all. Hospitals are grappling with this crisis that has only deepened since the pandemic, while National Nurses United insists it's not a lack of nurses but rather the adverse working conditions that are driving nurses away. More than semantics?-I think so. The truth lies in a nuanced perspective. The shortage isn't solely about the number of nurses but the inadequate staffing levels in critical care areas. As Linda Aiken points out, you can have a surplus of nurses, but if institutions don't hire enough, there will still be a shortage where it matters the most—patient care. This crisis is pushing nurses to their limits, causing #burnout, #moralinjury, and a #disillusion with the profession. The debate continues, and while the Biden administration's investment in nursing is a step forward, we must address the systemic issue—ensuring adequate staffing to provide quality care. It's time for healthcare leaders and nursing professionals to come together, find solutions, and, most importantly, ensure that our patients receive the care they deserve.
