🌊 A new report by Oceana finds China's distant-water fleet flocks the waters around the Galapagos Islands in the Eastern Pacific. 📊 In an effort to curb overfishing on the high seas, the nonprofit ocean conservation group is using our data to increase transparency around large-scale vessel activity and inform regulatory measures to support better management of marine resources. 🐟 This includes concentrated efforts from bodies such as the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization, which has been stepping up measures to ensure sustainable fishing in the South Pacific Ocean. Invasive carp might be amusing to watch fly through the air, but the impact these fish would have on the Great Lakes is no joke. That is why we wish to thank Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for stepping up and committing to protect the Great Lakes with the Brandon Road project. This joint effort with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is a monumental step towards keeping invasive carp out of the Great Lakes and builds upon TNC’s efforts over the last 20 years, in collaboration with many partners, to develop innovative methods for detecting and preventing invasive species from entering the Great Lakes. https://lnkd.in/gcCZnv-2

According to Ruslan Strilets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, Ukraine has lost almost six thousand hectares of the Askania Nova biosphere reserve in the Kherson region since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Fires, ecosystem destruction, animal theft and military use are just some examples of the Russian army's damaging activities in Ukraine's protected areas. According to data provided to Svidomi by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, the Russians have occupied more than 500 territories and nature reserves covering an area of about 0.8 million hectares. Since February 24, the Russian army has damaged about 800 biosphere reserves covering an area of 1.24 million hectares. Svidomi talks about some protected areas in the south of Ukraine and the consequences of active hostilities after February 2022.
