📣 FROM EU EXTERNAL BORDERS: JANUARY-AUGUST 📉 In the first eight months of 2024, the number of irregular border crossings into the European Union fell by 39% to 139 847. 🗺 Among the main migratory routes, the Central Mediterranean saw a 64% drop in irregular border crossings. Why do I think having a strategy makes sense… In any organisation, especially one as dynamic as Frontex, having a clear strategy is key. Not just a roadmap but something that brings us together, aligns our actions with a common purpose. I’ve seen this first-hand throughout my career and have always spend a considerable portion of my time on. When I speak to officers on the ground, I need to know that when I shake their hands and look them in the eyes, we share the same vision: that they understand the mission we’re all working towards and can translate that into their daily work. At Frontex, we’re facing some of the most complex challenges in Europe’s recent history, and we can’t tackle them without being on the same page. It’s not enough to simply react to what comes our way; we need to be proactive, innovative, and, above all, unified in our approach. That’s what our strategy is all about: ensuring that everyone, from the officers in the field to our partners and stakeholders in Brussels and in the European capitals, understands where we’re headed and how we’re going to get there. This month we’ve initiated efforts to deepen our staff’s understanding of our strategic objectives. For example, we highlighted our first, and possibly the most important, objective: being a reliable partner for Member States. We’re not just a service provider. We must work together to understand their needs and build solutions together. That might sound like rebranding yourself but it actually requires a reset of both our mindset and the way we operate at strategic, tactical and operational levels. Our strategy is about ensuring that everyone at Frontex, regardless of their role, is fully engaged with the direction we’re taking. We want our team to not only understand the strategy but believe in it and actively contribute to achieving our shared goals. To achieve this engagement with staff is crucial, because the most important part of our strategy isn’t written in a document. It’s the commitment we all make to each other.

We're excited to share with you the results of the “Smart Energy Management System for Unmanned Surface Vehicles” project funded by our Research Grants Programme! 🤩 🚤 The aim was to enhance the performance of unmanned surface vehicles (USV), which contributes to more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable maritime surveillance. A key outcome of the project is the development of a fully electric USV prototype, featuring photovoltaic panels and an advanced Smart Energy Management System. The final demonstration at the River Tejo near Lisbon, proved that under favourable conditions, the vehicle was able to operate solely on energy generated by the panels.
