Did you know that 67% of the global ocean has been examined by the IMMA Task Force? During annual workshops, ocean scientists have come together to identify 237 Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) - regions of the ocean to prioritise for protection measures - covering a total distance of over 25 million km2! In the North East Atlantic Ocean (NEATLO) alone, 28 new IMMAs have been discovered, from the Shetland & Azuras islands to Madeira & Ireland’s coasts. The area's rich biodiversity features migrating humpback, blue and fin whales, bottlenose dophins, and many species endemic to the region - some of which are classified as endangered.  Yachting relies on the health of the ocean & its species, and that’s why companies & individuals across the industry have helped raise over €265,000 for the NEATLO initiative. Wrecks and effects! - The deliberate sinking of wrecks has been a long-standing practice that benefits the marine ecosystem. For centuries, humans have been intentionally scuttling ships to create artificial reefs, providing a habitat for a diverse range of marine organisms. These wrecks serve as valuable shelters, breeding grounds, and feeding areas for countless marine species. - Artificial reefs formed by shipwrecks attract a variety of marine life, including corals, sponges, fish, and crustaceans. These structures offer protection from predators, as well as a source of food and shelter. This serene sea lion is, in fact, the largest land mammal you can spot while in the Galapagos Islands. Equally as at home as in the ocean, the Galapagos Sea Lion is the smallest sea lion species in the world. But don't let that statistic fool you, as the females can weigh up to 75kg (165lbs), and adult males (bulls) an impressive 250kg (551lbs)! These athletic creatures also have a lower metabolic rate than any other sea lion species on the planet, enabling them to survive in our (comparably) warm waters. If you were to step out into the street and ask the first ten people you see whether or not they believed dolphins are creatures of intelligence, 8 of 10 would probably say yes. Dolphins are highly intelligent, social, and charismatic marine mammals and are part of the family of toothed whales that includes orcas and pilot whales. Many dolphins species are threatened or endangered due to various human activities and environmental factors. Threats to dolphins; 🐬Habitat destruction and degradation. 🐬 Overfishing and by catch. 🐬 Pollution and noise pollution. 🐬 Climate change and ocean acidification. 🐬 Hunting and poaching. 🐬 Entanglement in fishing gear and marine debris. Conservation efforts, such as habitat protection, research, reduction of plastic waste, international cooperation and regulations on human activities, are essential to protect these intelligent and social creatures. Some notable organisations dedicated to dolphin conservation include: • World Wildlife Fund (WWF) • Ocean Conservancy • Sea Shepherd Conservation Society • Dolphin Conservation Institute • Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) In conclusion, the combination of dolphin's intelligence, physical abilities, and social structure, as well as their potential to produce an electrical field, makes them formidable predators in the ocean, and this is why sharks are often so afraid of them. A North Atlantic right whale has been spotted off the coast of Ireland for the first time in 114 years. This rare event underscores the importance of ongoing marine conservation efforts. Conservation via environmental protections is essential, but reducing ship traffic is key. For the US, that means modifying domestic trade policy to drastically reduce the shipment of raw materials to, and importing finished goods from, China and other SE Asian countries.

At present there are seven species of marine turtles in the world, five of which can be found in the Egyptian Red Sea! -The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) - The hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). -The leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) - The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) -The olive-ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea. According to the IUCN Classification, all these species are listed in the Red List either as: - critically endangered (hawksbill turtles) - endangered (green turtles) - vulnerable (leatherback, loggerhead and olive-ridley turtles).
