There is still a strong interest in seafaring careers among young Filipinos according to Atty. Iris Baguilat – President at Döhle Seafront Crewing (Manila), Inc. and Chairman at ALMA Maritime Group, with thousands enrolling in maritime schools every year. Ensuring these schools maintain high competency standards is essential for their preparation. Additionally, respecting proper holiday periods and avoiding overextension of time on board significantly boosts seafarers' job satisfaction. Companies that emphasise goals beyond financial incentives, like Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), tend to resonate more with the younger generation. Adapting to their changing demands is crucial for keeping the maritime industry vibrant and attractive. 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒚 - 𝑰'𝒎 𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒀𝑶𝑼! 👊🏼 As a big advocate for careers in maritime and more importantly women in maritime, this article was right up my street! I fully support WISTA UK and the The Honourable Company of Master Mariners latest initiative - it is great to see similar work being done elsewhere. Despite being a small population here in the Isle of Man, at Isle of Man Maritime we have made great strides in raising the profile of maritime as an industry here over the last few years. We have been working with the local Government and Department of Education, going into primary and secondary schools to educate the next generation on what a career in maritime can look like but also trying to encourage more young females to consider a career path in maritime by showcasing the vast opportunities available to them. As an industry, we really do need to rally together to inspire and attract the next generation to the maritime sector. 🌊 Let's 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 to motivate young talent. Personal success stories can have a powerful impact on aspiring maritime professionals and even those who may have never considered a career in maritime. 🌊 Let's 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 in the industry to encourage more young women to pursue maritime careers. 🌊 Let's 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 within the maritime sector. 🌊 Let's 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭, especially young women, to foster a more inclusive industry. 🌊 Let's 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬, they are essential for creating a dynamic and diverse maritime industry. So 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒍𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒅! Engaging the next generation is crucial for the sustained growth and development of the sector. By promoting female successes and encouraging young talent, we can ensure a bright future for the maritime industry. But we have to work together! So who's in for making some waves?! ✋🏼 #Maritime #IOMmaritime #WISTAUK #MaritimeCareers #MaritimeJobs #Diversity #Inclusion #WomenInMaritime

"There are so many perks to working offshore: The exciting work itself, the diversity of tasks and the amazing office view (nothing beats a sunrise at sea). No two days are the same when on board, and you are on a never-ending learning journey. Of course, the vacations are an honorable mention...What motivates me the most about my future career offshore and how I overcome adversity is the knowledge that I can actually make a difference. The maritime industry is male-dominated, conservative, and slow when it comes to progress in social sustainability. I want to be a part of the change that makes the maritime industry accessible and safe for everyone, no matter your gender, sexuality, religion, race, age, etc. I hope that one day I don’t have to be the only woman on board and that I will make another woman feel less alone or maybe inspired to walk down the same career path that I have. Maybe some days at sea will be hard, but the knowledge that my hard work and struggle might contribute to a more diverse and safer culture in the future keeps me going. -Beatrice Engels is from Sweden and a Cadet / Senior student at the Kalmar Maritime Academy ➡️ If you are a women+ working offshore or have worked offshore, we want to feature you! On today's edition of our spaces discussion we looked at the cost of acquiring maritime certifications and how it burdens seafarers owing to the low Job availability and pay. Seafarers made different submissions, the validity of the certificates should be increased and also some courses are irrelevant as they are interrelated. #lifeatsea #maritimecourses

On 23 September, the seventh Splash Maritime CEO Forum in Singapore brought together senior shipping executives to discuss key industry issues. A significant focus of the event was improving maritime life and attracting new talent. Panels addressed strategies for better appealing to younger generations while enhancing working and living conditions for those already at sea, including investment in better connectivity. There was also much emphasis on improving work-life balance post-pandemic, addressing stress, and in all ways improving seafarer well-being. Synergy Marine Group’s Co-CEO, Ship Management Division, Captain Swaminathan Hari, emphasised that the entire industry must act immediately to prioritise employees' mental health, with a goal of immediately lessening and as soon as possible eliminating seafarer suicide. This issue of mental health is not unique to the maritime industry. Other high-risk industries, such as mining, have also faced rising suicide rates among workers, where the stresses of isolation and demanding conditions elevate mental health risks. Synergy is committed to advocating for collective industry efforts to ensure the well-being of all maritime workers. Diversity was another key topic, with Captain Swaminathan discussing Synergy’s efforts to support female seafarers. He highlighted how Synergy has developed bespoke PPE designed for women, to ensure their safety and comfort. “We want them to feel at home and safe in their place of work. Making sure they have comfortable PPE designed to the highest safety and functional standards is, of course, a foundational and also critical part of that process.” he said. Additionally, Captain Swaminathan shared Synergy’s commitment to empowering the next generation of maritime professionals through the Chakra Scholarship initiative. By partnering with NGOs and engaging local communities, Synergy offers scholarships to aspiring seafarers aged 15-18, providing them with training and opportunities to pursue careers in the maritime industry. We extend our warm thanks to Splash Maritime and Offshore News (splash247.com) for hosting such a pivotal event and bringing industry leaders together to discuss these critical issues. #WeAreSynergy #Maritime #Shipping #FutureOfWork #Seafarers #MentalHealth #TalentDevelopment #SafetyFirst #maritimeSG

Maritime Tests Seafarers need to pass English language tests for shipowners. Some common tests are CES, Marlins, Seagull CBT, and ECDIS. Some tests are specific to certain companies. I used to teach maritime English and help seafarers improve their skills. Here are some tips to prepare for any maritime test: - Read websites on maritime topics in English related to your field. For example, MarineInsight. Practice reading texts in English, as tests can have many questions and limited time. - Review grammar and listening skills with exercises on websites and apps. Search for “English grammar tests” and “English listening tests.” - Watch reviews of different maritime tests on YouTube. You should find them interesting. Also, use platforms for maritime test practice. For example: Safe Skipper Boating Quizzes, USCGQ, Marine Site. Search online for more platforms. If you know the test name, focus on it. Look for videos and materials by seafarers who passed the test. This will help you find and fix your weaknesses. When you take the test, make sure you have a quiet place and fast internet, as the test can last from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Watch the timer and number of questions, as they vary by company. Sometimes there is no timer, or you have less than a minute per question. In these cases, knowing the test format and questions can help, as suggested before. If the test link from the company does not work, try using a VPN. This can happen in some countries. If you fail the test, ask the company for another chance. Some companies allow this. And if they do not, remember that there are other options for you. One more tip: When you pass the test and get a good score, save the certificate and add it to your CV. This will boost your chances, as crewing companies will see that you have both experience and great English skills. Good luck and get great contracts! #MaritimeTests #Seafarers #TestPreparation #EnglishLanguage #MaritimeIndustry

High industry turnout at this important event would be a powerful symbol of Maritime Leadership's commitment to Seafarers' well-being. For decades, Seafarers have faced significant challenges, often feeling undervalued and unappreciated despite their crucial role in the critical global supply chain. (Except on 25 Junes-Seafarers Day) This includes instances of abandonment, detention (no shoreleave), criminalization, piracy and even violence (areas of armed aggression). Our Seafarer's dedication and sacrifice deserve concrete action. Thankfully, the Mission to Seafarers, with programs like WeCare, SafeTALK, and Happy@Sea, alongside dedicated Port Chaplains and willing Volunteers, demonstrate unwavering commitment to Seafarers' total well-being. By working together as a committed global Maritime Community, we can create a future where these challenges for all Seafarers are significantly mitigated or even eradicated.
Experience the ultimate celebration of those who advocate for seafarer welfare at the highly-anticipated event of the year!
