#FLORIDA’s legislature just passed a bill #banning the intentional #release of #balloons - one of the deadliest forms of #plastic #pollution for ocean wildlife. 🐬Oceana applauds Senator Nick DiCeglie and Rep. Linda Chaney for their commitment to protecting #Florida's shorelines and ocean life. 🎈 #Balloons and their plastic ribbons, tie-off disks, clips, and other attachments can be easily ingested and swallowed by endangered sea turtles, seabirds, and other ocean wildlife. In fact, studies show balloons rank among the deadliest ocean plastic for key wildlife and are the deadliest form of plastic debris for seabirds.

World Aquatic Animal Day was created to raise awareness about the importance of aquatic animals to our societies and ecosystems. Due to human activities, these animals are often at risk either through direct interaction or habitat degradation. Aquatic animals include fish, molluscs, crustaceans, birds, starfish, corals, insects, mammals, and reptiles. They play a vital role in maintaining a healthy planet, but many people lack knowledge about them, which leads to their overconsumption, neglect, and abuse. The theme this year is “The Impact of Our Human Activities on Aquatic Animals.” It's essential to raise awareness of how we affect aquatic life. World Aquatic Animal Day aims to create policies, laws, education, and outreach to protect these valuable animals. We’re celebrating a major win for Florida’s marine wildlife! Starting July 1, Florida will ban the intentional release of balloons. This incredible measure marks a huge victory for our oceans! Balloons contribute significantly to marine debris. By preventing their release, we're taking a crucial step towards protecting our beloved marine animals and preserving our beautiful beaches. Why This Matters: - Marine Life Protection: Balloons are often mistaken for food, with one study of sea turtles finding that out of 41 pieces of rubber ingested, 32 pieces were balloon fragments. - Beach Preservation: Keeping our shores clean and free from plastic pollution. - Wildlife Safety: Helping prevent injuries and fatalities among marine animals. Turtley innovative! 🐢🌱 Chilean food tech company NotCo has developed a 100% plant-based version of turtle soup – an alternative that aims to replace demand for sea turtle meat, and thus help save endangered turtle species around the world. While sea turtle species enjoy legal protection in most of the world, illegal poaching for meat and shells continues to threaten their population, with climate change and pollution worsening the situation. However, offering a plant-based alternative to turtle soup could curb the demand for sea turtle meat – thus helping protect these endangered animals from hunting. Thin, recreational fishing line loops cause terrible damage. The plastic is too strong to be broken by the animal's slow growth or regular movements, and thin enough to relentlessly cut into the seal's flesh like a razor blade. We don't blame the fishing line, it only fulfills its purpose to entrap and kill marine animals. We blame the fishing industry. Both, commercial as well as recreational fishermen have failed to develop a sustainable method that prevents harm to other animals. We believe the industry has gotten away with this system because their trail of destruction usually stays hidden below the surface of the ocean.
