This framework is critical in it demonstrates the need to site and expand protected areas in a strategic way - that takes into account habitat replication, connectivity, adequacy of size - it's quality not quantity that can make MPAs more than the sum of their parts.

Loro Parque Fundación, in collaboration with the Center for Species Survival of Macaronesia, is advocating for the creation of a Marine Biodiversity Sanctuary in this region at the European Parliament. This ambitious project aims to protect one of the most species-rich areas on our planet, ensuring the survival of 84% of the species found in the North Atlantic Ocean. Celebrating International Marine Protected Areas Day: Exploring Economic and Ecological Benefits. By Cloverley Lawrence As we mark International Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day, it’s important that we recognize the incredible role MPAs play in safeguarding our oceans' biodiversity while providing significant economic benefits. MPAs are designated areas where human activities are more stringently regulated than the surrounding waters, much like national parks on land. They serve as havens for marine life, offering protection from overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution. But beyond their ecological importance, MPAs have a profound impact on local economies, a fact highlighted in recent studies (e.g. Costello 2024).

💡 It is estimated that humanity is outside the safe operating space for at least 4 of the 9 planetary boundaries, including biodiversity.   🌳 In Europe as well, nature is facing serious decline, with threatened ecosystems and terrestrial and marine species and habitats at poor conservation status.   On this International #Biodiversity Day, Meropi Klogka reflects on the next challenges for the protection and conservation of terrestrial and marine areas in Europe, in light of the upcoming institutional changes 👇   #IDB2024

Along with being popular for woodchucks checking shadows, Feb. 2 is also World Wetlands Day. This date is the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands, which was adopted as an international treaty in 1971. Today is to remind people how wetlands are important for ecosystems and biodiversity. Today the European Commission has proposed to downgrade the protection of the grey wolf in Europe. This alarming proposal may constitute a pivotal point not only for this species, but for the whole nature conservation system in the EU. Wolves are not only a symbol of hope for the recovery of European nature, but most importantly a keystone species supporting healthy ecosystems, which in turn have crucial importance for our economy and quality of life.
