MethaneSAT: Pioneering Satellite to Revolutionize Environmental Monitoring The Environmental Defense Fund has developed a satellite project set to launch in March, aiming to collect global data on methane levels. Orbiting 300 miles above Earth, the satellite will circle 15 times a day, with a specific focus on methane emissions. Google has announced it will generate a methane map based on the collected data, identifying point sources and emissions over areas globally. While not in real-time, the map will be published on Google Earth Engine, addressing gaps in existing tracking efforts. This endeavor is positioned to transform current environmental monitoring practices. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, plays a significant role in global warming. It is imperative to address methane emissions from both fossil fuel operations and agriculture to effectively combat the climate crisis. Google will utilize sophisticated artificial intelligence technology to analyze satellite data, aiming to pinpoint specific types and locations of oil and gas infrastructure vulnerable to leaks. The collaboration between Google and the Environmental Defense Fund on MethaneSAT signifies a new era of global climate accountability. The emissions map is expected to empower energy companies, researchers, and policymakers to implement targeted measures in reducing methane emissions and preserving the environment. Beyond excited to share our new #GENIE article, now available open access in Nature Communications! Novel, potentially radical climate intervention technologies like carbon dioxide removal #CDR and solar geoengineering #SRM are attracting attention as the adverse impacts of climate change are increasingly felt. The ability of publics, particularly in the Global South, to participate in discussions about research, policy, and deployment is restricted amidst a lack of familiarity and engagement. Drawing on a large-scale, cross-country exercise of nationally representative surveys (N = 30,284) in 30 countries and 19 languages, this article establishes the first global baseline of #public perceptions of climate-intervention technologies. Here, we show that #globalsouth publics are significantly more favorable about potential benefits and express greater support for climate-intervention technologies. The younger age and level of climate urgency and vulnerability of these publics emerge as key explanatory variables, particularly for solar geoengineering. Conversely, Global South publics express greater concern that climate-intervention technologies could undermine climate-mitigation efforts, and that solar geoengineering could promote an unequal distribution of risks between poor and rich countries.
