Are you on the right ship? In the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, the Flying Dutchman ship has a very peculiar trait. With every year that passes, the crewmen become less human, their bodies taking on traits from the sea, until eventually they become part of the Flying Dutchman itself. I remember that being an alarming aspect of the plot in those movies, and I think in a lot of ways, something similar is happening to all of us every day. We are all part of some kind of “ship.” For many, it’s the organization you work for. For others, it might be a sports team or social group. Since you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with, simply taking a step back and taking note of what ship you’re on and who is onboard with you, will give you a pretty clear picture of where you’re headed. Like it or not, you are becoming more and more like your ship every day. Eventually, you will be part of the Flying Dutchman itself. So the question is, are you in an organization and around people with traits you want to emulate or does something need to change? Find your ship that is full of people you respect, can learn from, and want to become more like.
