Mokgophana Ramasobana chairing closing session of South African Monitoring Evaluation Association SAMEA conference - with Dr Candice Morkel Andrealisa Belzer, CE Josephine Watera, CE Victor Naidu. Stressing changes of mindsets, we need to be driving the change, what we do as a result of this event in changing our mindset, and the need to take the best of different knowledge systems. Need to reactivate the activist streak - start with where you are and do what you can. Move away from considering people as ‘beneficiaries’ and subjects but as people with agency. We mustn’t keep quiet but make more and more noise, at all levels. But how do we know and understand the systemic issues that we need to address? Training and Resource Director | Community-Engaged Research | Rhetoric PhD | 10+ Years Creating Learning Spaces in Higher Education and Nonprofit Organizations
Sometimes "community-centered" strategies aren't always responsive to evolving community needs. When something works in your community-academic research partnership and you continue with that framework for years without iterating, your so-called "community-centered" strategies may prevent you from conducting authentic research. When you incorporate feedback loops and prioritize reciprocity in the structural development of your community-academic research partnerships, then you can account for those evolving shifts and iterate when needed.
How can researchers establish bidirectional community involvement, feedback loops, and reciprocity in their research process? Save the date for the next CEACR webinar on April 19th at 1 p.m. ET to learn from the experts as they discuss considerations and strategies for engaging in participatory research processes with community members and organizations, including study design, partnership structures, engagement planning, and bidirectional communication. 🌍 Reflecting on the powerful closing session of the SAMEA 9th Biennial Conference, chaired by Mokgophana Ramasobana, alongside thought leaders Dr Candice Morkel, Andrealisa Belzer, CE , Josephine Watera, CE, and Victor Naidu. They highlighted a critical message: It’s time for a mindset shift in evaluation. We must lead the change by integrating diverse knowledge systems and reactivating our activist streak. It’s about moving beyond seeing people as mere ‘beneficiaries’—they are individuals with agency, and we must amplify their voices. The question remains: How do we deeply understand and address the systemic issues before us? Let’s make more noise at every level, embracing our roles as change-makers. #SameaConference #EvaluationForChange #MindsetShift Ian Goldman

Last week, on April 23rd, I gave a presentation at the 15th Conference of AETAP (Association of European Threat Assessment Professionals). I was a speaker *screams on the inside* at a Threat Assessment Professionals Conference. It was a wonderful experience, from getting the first "yes" after submitting the abstract, to responding to a few questions sparked by the presentation. As a speaker, on behalf of the SPIRIT EU project, I presented the Enhanced Vulnerability Assessment Methodology (EVAM) developed during the project. The EVAM was developed with the contribution of the SPIRIT Consortium, under the task led by Ianus Consulting. This has been a very gratifying experience, bringing something I had worked so hard on to the eyes of other professionals, who have the experience and expertise to provide input and peer review. The EVAM was very well received, and I honestly hope it can be further developed based on feedback from practitioners, to be widely disseminated and used as a proper result. Enhancing protection for places of worship is a cause I got really passionate about through working on this project. SPIRIT has been an amazing opportunity for me to work on such an important issue, expanding my qualifications and sharing valuable professional exchanges with colleagues whom I highly appreciate and enjoy. SPIRIT EU will continue working on its objectives and the greater aim of safeguarding religious sites and gatherings; there's many more activities and results to share, so stay tuned! #threatassessment #Paris2024 #AETAPConference #placesofworship #SPIRIT #threat #protection #PPP
