On our last Ortelius trip we completed a shoreline cleanup at the Seven Islands. At Isflakbukta, Phippsøya, we retrieved the large fishing net in the photo. On the second landing site at Parryøya we found more smaller pieces of debris — much more dangerous for marine life and the environment! Oceanwide's beach cleanups are important for the preservation of our polar environments and are extremely popular among our staff and guests. Interested in learning more about our cleanups? 🚨NEW CAMPAIGN🚨 Bottom trawls are decimating marine life in Europe’s so-called “protected” areas. This highly destructive fishing practice involves vessels dragging weighted nets over thriving ecosystems, scraping bare once vibrant habitats, and indiscriminately sweeping up vulnerable species like dolphins, corals, turtles, and more. Only One, Seas At Risk, and Oceana in Europe demand that EU leaders actually protect their protected areas and the marine life that relies on them. Act now by adding your name to the appeal at the link below, and then share this post with three of your ocean-loving friends. https://lnkd.in/e6ZH7wNp

🤔 Did you know destructive bottom-trawl fishing is allowed in our marine protected areas? It's awful, and it's got to stop. ❌ What gives us hope, is how well our ocean havens can recover if given the chance. We recently sat down with community dive group, Sussex Underwater, to discuss just that. They're highlighting the astonishing recovery that can happen when trawlers are banned, and marine life has a chance to thrive once more 🐟🐙🦑 Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/e3S_ufuV

Political Officer at @ifaw EU/BE. I work on EU policies related to marine conservation, maritime transport, wildlife crime, SDGs, and biodiversity.
Only one thing makes less sense than bottom trawling - doing it in marine protected areas (MPAs). I signed this petition. Will you? Unfortunately, this highly controversial and destructive fishing technique has some supporters. The European Commission believes that "79% of the coastal seabed is considered to be physically disturbed, mainly caused by bottom trawling". In the EU Action Plan on “Protecting and restoring marine ecosystems for sustainable and resilient fisheries”, the Commission suggests action. So what is the Commission planning to do? Make bottom trawling prohibited in all European waters? No. They planned to prohibit it in MPAs that are Natura 2000 sites designated under the Habitats Directive to protect the seabed and marine species. Disastrous fishing, including bottom trawling, affects 86% of MPAs, so it should shock no one that the Commission wanted to act. Unfortunately, member states are often not on board. Hence, this petition calls on EU leaders to protect their protected areas and the marine life that relies on them. But before you sign the petition, one reason to be cheerful - just yesterday (16.4.) Greece announced it will become the first European country to ban bottom trawling in all of its national marine parks and protected areas. It makes sense to ask representatives to do more to protect European waters and biodiversity.

Precisely. It makes perfect sense that"No Take" #marine protected areas are key to ensuring that habitats stay intact and allow nature 🐟 🐠 🦐 to rebound as demonstrated in #mexico Revillagigedo National Park. All countries with coastlines can follow this example to ensure that 30% of our ocean is protected as set out by the global 2030 goal. https://lnkd.in/g3i34wK6

It is truly an honor to be published in The San Diego Union-Tribune! Thanks to WILDCOAST, I am living my dream of conserving the places that have shaped me into who I am today. This article can tell you a little bit more about my role in protecting these coastal treasures for generations to come! https://lnkd.in/g2t3dtTy

Delve deeper into the underwater world by contributing to a marine conservation initiative. Meet the experts who protect Mozambique’s marine life and learn about the challenges faced by whales and sharks worldwide. Your task is to gather data on whale sharks, humpback whales and other marine life. When conditions are good, you’ll head out on the project boat for snorkelling surveys, and you’ll record your discoveries in the database. You could also get involved in humpback monitoring from the shore. Go one step further by organising a beach clean and categorising the litter – this helps local conservationists to target those responsible and choose the best solutions. #SchoolTrip #Expedition

Did you know that Jersey's seabed belongs to the public and that you can help us protect it? 🌊 Jersey’s remarkable marine spatial plan aims to create protected areas, prioritising the health of marine habitats, while at the same time allowing low-impact fishing, such as potting, hook and line, netting, hand-diving and other human activities to operate sustainably - revitalising the health of Jersey’s waters for generations to come. Time is running out to support the Jersey Marine Spatial Plan. ⏰ Dive into the details and help us protect Jersey’s marine life here 👉 https://ow.ly/CCF450QrIvf #Jersey #MarineSpatialPlan #OceanConservation #OceanProtection #OceanAction

To safeguard migrating marine turtles, it's crucial to grasp their population patterns and where they reside. For instance, young green turtles depart a Costa Rican beach, feeding near Bermuda for two decades. Upon maturity, they come back to their birthplace in Costa Rica to breed, lay eggs, and perpetuate their lifecycle. Dive into 👉 bit.ly/3PM7Mxa to learn more about the #BermudaTurtleProject, our joint initiative with SEA TURTLE CONSERVANCY, INC. #WildlifeWednesday

By 2050, it is estimated that there will be more plastic by the metric ton than fish in our oceans. If a visual like this doesn't make you rethink your purchasing decisions as a consumer, advocate for sustainability, and embrace a regenerative mindset, I'm not sure what will. Please consider supporting organizations like this and above all, do your part to advance recyclability in the benefit of future generations. #sustainabilitymatters #circulareconomy
More than 50% of the world's coral reefs have already disappeared or are at risk of disappearing in the next few decades. These vibrant ecosystems are of utmost significance for marine animals, providing them with shelter, food, and breeding grounds. However, their significance extends far beyond marine life, as they serve as a natural barrier that guards coastlines against the devastating effects of erosion, and storms. It is high time that we take action to save these delicate marine ecosystems to ensure their survival for future generations, which is why we created The Restoration Collection, in partnership with Coral Gardeners 🪸🌊 You can check out our collection here: https://bit.ly/49LlCIp

Non-Executive Director Veris Australia, Director Ozfish Unlimited, Independent Consultant, Strategic Advisor WSP (Founder Elton Consulting),
So good to see the expansion of the program nationally.
The progress in seagrass restoration science and success has to be one of the most critical breakthroughs I've seen for estuary habitat recovery in my 25 years in the industry. It wasn't so long ago that we weren't sure it could be done. But failure is success in progress. It's labour intensive to get it right and to scale it up, and I couldn't be prouder that OzFish has the people, tenacity and the tools to take up the challenge. We've had the fishing community successfully restoring seagrass in WA for the past 5 years. Our only challenge now is to continue to scale, across through SA, Vic, Tas and into Qld. If you can help, reach out to us, this is a job for many hands, many partners, many contributors. If you like the idea, we can find a way for you to get involved. Thank you to Catherine Norwood at Coretext for showcasing our story in the latest SeaWeed News. Happy reading.. https://lnkd.in/gJSn6SQ7

3mogood job and the place is prone for large amounts of plastic / fishing gear. Couple of years ago we've removed two complete zodiac loads from precisely the same spot
