Outside the world of geopolitics or even polar travel, it’s probably not common knowledge that Svalbard and Spitsbergen are one in the same. At least, depending on who you ask. But why this disagreement over something so easy to simplify? The answer lies, as with many other geographical oddities, in the tangles of history. Read more on our blog. 📷 by Elke Lindner

The concept of the moving border. Two things need to be stressed. First, this is a flexible approach to borders and bordering as an outcome and process. Alpine borders do cross mountain ridges, snowfields and glaciers which are melting and collapsing in some cases. The volatility of “stable” geographical features having direct implications for lines on the map. Second, one can only adopt the moving border in regions of high geopolitical trust and shared methodologies. The counter factual worth asking is where would this be unimaginable? And it is worth noting that all of this depends on governments/parliaments not being consumed by popular geopolitical populism. For some it might be unthinkable for a country to give up any part of its national territory, even if that territory is remote, uninhabited by human communities and far removed from any immediate strategic priority. “Switzerland and Italy have redrawn a border that traverses an Alpine peak as melting glaciers shift the historically defined frontier”.

Uniting against Climate Threats to Cultural Heritage The European Parliamentary Research Service), through the insightful analyses of Fearghas O Béara and the meticulous Briefing by Magdalena Pasikowska-Schnass, has once again highlighted the urgent need for global collaboration in the face of climate threats to our cultural heritage. At University of Oxford's Laudato Si' Research Institute (LSRI) in growing partnership with the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) and other global entities, we are committed to tackling these challenges head-on. Engaging with global partners like the #EPRS could significantly amplify our efforts. Looking forward to potential collaborations that safeguard our cultural legacies for future generations. #CulturalHeritage #ClimateChange #CulturalPolicy

My latest review has posted at Pirates and Privateers: Sailing Across the Seas by Wu Weiwei Fujian, China has a rich maritime history. It also played a role in the Maritime Silk Road. This book, as well as others in the series, hopes to reawaken interest in and reinvent the MSR for the 21st century by showing Fujian's important contributions of the past.
