The pufferfish is nothing but inventive when it comes to creative ways to avoid becoming somebody else’s dinner. Filling their stomachs with huge amounts of water (and sometimes air), the pufferfish can blow themselves up to several times their regular size, intimidating their predators and making them a difficult snack to swallow. If blowing up to the shape of a ball doesn’t scare away any would-be predators, then some pufferfish have spines on their skin to deter being eaten. Other clever adaptions a pufferfish uses to keep itself safe include poisoning its enemies by secreting lethal toxins or even attacking other threatening animals with its beak-like teeth. Pufferfishes look so cute with their big smile :D I always love them so much! "Dare to make the world a better, more humane place." Wildlife rescuer and passionate advocate for a more compassionate, sustainable and ecologically-responsible world that cherishes the diversity of all life.
Yet another tragic loss of life due directly to the Government of New South Wales' refusal to take the issue of marine #entanglements seriously. #NetsOutNow Please consider signing and sharing this petition. This outdated, ultimately ineffective, and indiscriminately destructive reliance on #sharknets must cease. More effective, modern, and humane alternatives exist. The massive toll upon non-target species is categorically indefensible. Maintaining the outdated policy despite widespread community concerns, ecological considerations and animal welfare principles is inexcusable, and demonstrates a fundamental acceptance of fear- and ignorance-based policymaking. #marinemammals #marineturtles #EntangledWildlifeAustralia Chris Minns Tara Moriarty Hannah Tait Emilia Michael Jas Chambers Sharon Livermore Save Our Marine Life Karl Goodsell Nick Chiarelli Robina Tower Jessica McKelson Bree Talbot Stephen Van Mil Genevieve Robinson Jacquie Pohl Jacqueline Pinard, B.B.A. ORRCA Inc. Last February we discovered that a landslide made Garie Beach inaccessible to the public, and we called for the shark net to be immediately removed. Despite this, the shark net remains in place, posing a huge risk to local marine life. This weekend the shark net at Garie Beach claimed another victim - an endangered leatherback turtle. Leatherback turtles are the deepest diving reptiles with a taste for jellyfish that deserve protection for a healthy planet. This is just another reason why we're calling on the NSW Government to announce when shark nets will be permanently removed. If you agree, sign our petition: https://hubs.la/Q02rsp190

Whoops! Didn't mean to scare you there — was just paying a visit to the EPA Diving team. 🦈 #EPADivers are data gatherers, note takers, and photographers that observe and document changes to aquatic environments. EPA Divers participate in diverse activities, such as: 🔬 Sampling submerged drums of unknown materials 🗺️ Mapping illegal underwater dump sites 🐟 Inspecting waste discharges from seafood processing facilities 🪸 Assessing the health of seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and other important marine habitats Learn more about scientific diving, and the EPA Divers team: https://www.epa.gov/diving #SharkWeek

Freedivers in the old world in a glance. Who the first divers were, we don't know. Nor can we be sure why they dived, thought it's fairly safe to assume that fishing foro mollusks, crustaceans, and other food was amajor reason. We do know that mean were diving as early as 4500 B.C., archeologists have unearthed shells in Mesopotamia that must have come up from the seafloor. But there is a gap in the history of diving of more than a thousand years_until the Theban VI Dynasty in Eygept, around 3200 B.C. many of the archeological sites there infdicates that freediving was wide spread fro the shells the ornaments were made from could have been obtained only by diving. learn more https://lnkd.in/dBcA9hZz.... #freediving #freedivinghistory #freedivingsession #freedivingphotography #freedivinglife #freedivingcourse #Aqaba #jordan #padi #paditv #redsea

🏊🏼♀️Human contact with coral reefs doesn't always look as obvious as in these two photos. Yet, several scientific papers have shown that divers and snorkellers often unintentionally cause harm to the same environment they love so much... How come? 🤿Unsecured gear, fin kicks, hand contact with corals, sand movement... these are some of the ways that the reef might accidentally be damaged by marine users. A research found that SCUBA diving impacted coral reefs through divers' direct contact that "caused breakage, fragmentation and led to disease" (Sumanapala, D et al. 2023). In 1999 a study revealed that impacts were also caused to a giant coral colony off the coast of Taiwan (Soong, K et al. 1999. 🗣️Awareness and the development and enhancement of educational activities during the pre-dive briefings are key to the protection of the marine ecosystem 🌏 #MapTheGiants #GiantCorals #Corals #CoralReef #Unimib #SaveCoralReefs #SaveTheCorals #SCUBA #Maldives #MarineConservation #MarineBiodiversity #ReefResilience

Another interesting read given all the interest around hydrogen albeit from a different human interest angle - deep cave diving using a concoction that includes hydrogen. We have much to thank for the small group of folks, i.e the scientists, enthusiasts, professional hobbyists etc who are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible across the various fields of human endeavour from the deepest oceans and highest mountains, to outer space. #diving #oceangraphy #scientificachievements #pushingthelimits #discoveries

More than toothy grins, sharks have spots! Sand tiger sharks have unique, identifiable spot patterns which scientists use to identify individual animals. The spot patterns, visible along the sides of the photographed sharks, are like a fingerprint identification to track data on their movement and behavior over time. Support this important research by uploading pictures of sharks you have seen while diving to spotasharkusa.com. #ConservationTuesday
