Very excited and honored to attend tomorrow. Some facts: More than 100 million Americans are in medical debt, which is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the United States. More than 90% of Americans support healthcare price transparency, yet only 36% of hospitals comply with rules requiring them to disclose prices. When hospitals and insurers hide their prices, they can charge whatever they want. A recent report showed that prices vary prices varied by an average of 10 times for the same care within the same hospitals across different health plans and by an average of more than 30 times for the care at different hospitals within the same state. In my previous post [1], I was too quick to arrive at a conclusion saying that Kaiser's membership dropped - its flagship contract dropped; that's a fact. To be clear, Kaiser's total membership grew. So, I was investigating what was going on. It turned out Kaiser now has a new D-SNP contract, H8794. After looking at all contract numbers side by side, the most logical conclusion I can draw is Kaiser moved its members to a new D-SNP plan. Over a decade ago, a personal journey through the challenges of the care sector inspired me to seek change. The founding of Care Campaign for the Vulnerable (CCFTV) was sparked by a vision to implement safety monitoring to protect those who could not protect themselves. Their unwavering commitment has not only inspired change but has also reshaped our view of what is achievable. We believe, now more than ever, that the care sector can stand as a beacon of safety and transparency. This belief is reinforced by the exemplary dedication of our partners, who have been instrumental in our work . Special mention must be made of Care Protect Ltd and Signature Senior Lifestyle Limited - the first corporate provider to adopt Independant safety monitoring and publicly support our initiative. Their commitment to our cause has helped propel our advocacy to new heights, demonstrating what is possible when compassion and action unite. I’m excited to be attending the 2024 United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce National Conference in Kansas City this year United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) There are few professional events more inspiring than being in the company of an organization that represents 5 million Hispanic-owned businesses, and whose members continue to initiate 3 times the number of new businesses each year than any other demographic. Collectively, Hispanic owned businesses contribute more $800 billion to the American economy every year. Of course, every great story has a “but.” In this case, the “but” is Hispanic's access to equitable healthcare and safe, authentic, and affordable medicine. According to the most recent U.S. census, 18% of Hispanic residents lack health insurance, making them the most under-insured demographic, per capita, in the country. Further complicating this already complex problem is the Mexican drug cartels’ continued efforts to manufacture, smuggle, and distribute illicit and counterfeit medicines to vulnerable and unwitting patients throughout the U.S. Thanks to the tireless work being performed by police officers and federal agents from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Los Angeles Police Department – JoinLAPD, Nevada Attorney General's Office, Arizona Attorney General's Office, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Drug Enforcement Administration and FDA, among others, the cartels have a battle on their hands. Additionally, thanks to programs like the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Safe.Pharmacy and PhRMA's Mat.Org, patients have options to purchase medicine safely. Let’s partner together to raise awareness about these programs and ensure that all patients have access to equitable healthcare and safe, authentic, and affordable medicine.
