Seaweed Farming: A Sustainable Solution for Kenya’s Coastal Communities Amidst Climate Change Seaweed farming has emerged as a transformative solution for the coastal villages of Kenya, offering a sustainable livelihood alternative in the face of climate change. Traditionally, many villagers in Kenya’s coastal regions relied on farming crops like cassava and maize. However, the increasing unpredictability of rainfall, rising temperatures, and the encroaching sea have made these #ClimateChange #KenyaCoastal #SeaweedFarming #Sustainablesolution >>> Read more

“It’s not just about growing food; it’s about adapting to the new reality we face.” As we know, smallholder farmers in Africa are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. They rely on their crops both for food-supply and as their only form of income. They usually cannot afford expensive irrigation systems. A mix of techniques makes the difference: using drought resilient varieties, mixed cropping, mulching etc. In South Africa and other countries in the region the impact of the climate crisis hurts already for years. The smallholders interviewed in South Africa’s North West province have been adapting their farming due to climate change already back in 2010, based on their indigenous knowledge of how to cope with droughts, storms and changes in the climate, how to conserve water, protect the soil, and how to introduce new crops. The climate-smart farming techniques lead to a better maize yield, a more regular supply of food for the farmers, and a wider variety of crops. Fantastic - this is the way to go! South Africa is coordinating a national climate change response in the agricultural sector. As part of this, climate smart agriculture was integrated into agricultural policies and programmes run by agricultural scientists, non-governmental organisations, and government agriculture extension services. #ClimateChangeAdaption #ClimateSmartAgriculture
Hundreds of small-scale farmers in South Africa’s North West province who switched to eco-friendly, climate-smart farming have seen their maize harvest shoot up and their soil improve. 💻 Omotoso Abeeb and Abiodun Olusola Omotayo (PhD, OCP, Pr.Sci.Nat.), North-West University / Noordwes-Universiteit #Climate

Bees are vital to our ecosystems and farming systems, yet their populations are facing alarming declines. In the UK alone, 13 species have already been lost, and another 35 are at risk. Without pollinators, UK farmers would face an additional £1.8 billion cost to pollinate their crops, a stark reminder of their importance to sustainable agriculture. At Habitat Regeneration, we specialise in establishing pollen and nectar flower mixes to support pollinators like bumblebees, solitary bees, butterflies, and hoverflies. These mixes provide essential food sources from late spring through summer while encouraging natural pest control near cropped areas as part of an integrated pest management approach. As an added benefit, these projects can qualify for funding under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI), making it easier for farmers to invest in sustainable practices that enhance biodiversity and improve crop resilience. By working together to protect pollinators, we can strengthen farm sustainability while safeguarding the natural systems we all depend on. In the middle of Cape Town’s Cape Flats lies the Philippi Horticutural Area, an agricultural zone that produces more than half of the city’s fresh produce. It sits on top of an aquifer that allows for “drought-proof” farming in a region where intensifying droughts have become the norm. But due to rezoning proposals by developers, the land is under threat. Report by Tom Canetti. https://lnkd.in/esa2bYVU

New #Greenpeace analysis exposes injustice in EU farming. Data reveals a widening divide between struggling small-scale commercial family farms vs. mega-farms that capture most of the subsidies and profits generated by the sector. Greece: 31% of #farms in Greece disappear from the map. Read the report (in Greek) here (national data are in page7): https://lnkd.in/dH3SxPx2 The report in English, here: : https://lnkd.in/egr7ERN8 Main CONCLUSIONS : => Since 2007, the EU has lost almost two million commercial farms, most of them small-scale operations that have either closed or scaled up to industrial levels of production. Meanwhile, the number of mega-farms has grown by more than half. => This situation is a result of political failure. The relentless focus on maximising agricultural production, often championed by conservative and populist politicians, has disproportionately benefited large farms, while doing little to safeguard smaller ones or improve rural livelihoods. => European politicians have the power to reshape public subsidies under the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy to support this change, to enforce rules against unfair trading practices, and regulate private sector finance to support small-scale and ecological farming
