During yesterday's Emergency Response Team (ERT) meeting, NRG revealed that a modification to the cooling system is necessary, and a technical solution has already been chosen and is in the engineering phase. Although NRG aims to restart the cycle as soon as possible, it's expected to happen no earlier than the end of next week. In the meantime, the LVR-15 and MARIA reactors are adjusting their schedules to accommodate the HFR outage, and additional irradiations are planned at the BR2 reactor. Nuclear Medicine Europe expects no disruptions to Mo-99 supply this week but warns of potential shortages next week. Further updates will be provided; the next ERT meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 27th. See below for the official communication. In situations like this, cooperation among reactor operators is crucial to prevent disruptions and shortages, ensuring patients' care. A lot is happening behind the scenes! The Nuclear Medicine Europe Security of Supply Working Group serves as the platform for ensuring such collaboration. It coordinates production schedules, monitors developments constantly, and reacts swiftly to any issues that may arise. Important update regarding an expected shortage of medical radioisotopes. The Nuclear Medicine Europe Emergency Response Team (ERT) met yesterday evening to discuss the ongoing delay in the restart of the HFR reactor, initially scheduled for 10 October. NRG has reported that a technical solution, originally planned for implementation during the December 2024 maintenance stop, is in an advanced stage but is still undergoing a testing phase. It is now estimated that the process will take several more weeks, making the start of the planned October cycle highly unlikely. The ERT explored potential adjustments to the maintenance schedules of other reactors to mitigate the impact, but significant changes appear unlikely. As a result, there will likely be a substantial reduction in the supply of medical #radioisotopes in the coming weeks, with Mo-99 shortages for Tc-99m generator manufacturers expected to start later this week, potentially reaching up to 40% of the usual supply in some areas. Stakeholders are advised to communicate with suppliers and activate procedures used during past shortages, including alternative imaging methods. Nuclear Medicine Europe will issue another update in the week of 21 October, or sooner if new developments arise. Read the full communication below.

UPDATE : OPAL Reactor Maintenance Extended to End of September ANSTO informed Nuclear Medicine Europe that the OPAL #reactor will resume service at the end of September due to the complex task of replacing and reconnecting the Cold Neutron Source (CNS). After OPAL's return, a 10-day irradiation and processing period is needed before #nuclearmedicine distribution can begin. Nuclear Medicine Europe (and its Emergency Response Team) reports no expected #supply disruptions and will update as needed. Read below the full statement. #isotopes #radiopharmaceuticals #molecularimaging

Cold fact: each year in Europe, 12 million procedures using #nuclearmedicine are performed. And the demand is increasing, fast. Prompting continuous #innovation, actors of the #industry, from equipment to tracers, are constantly working on developing products to boost efficiency and aid patients in detecting potential risks at an earlier stage. Just one additional reactor (of comparable size to BR2 reactor)could allow the increase of production of #therapeutic doses for several hundred thousand patients a year. In the meantime, one of the missions of Nuclear Medicine Europe is to ensure the monitoring and coordination of the reactor operators, through the Security of Supply Working Group. Read more about it in "How the Nuclear Medicine Sector Coordinates Isotope Supply", a pictorial view available on the Publications page : https://lnkd.in/eK8C2m9u #radioisotopes #molecularimaging #Mo99 #nuclearreactor

An important issue that the Massachusetts Medical Society and Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility has also drawn attention to this year: the health risks of nuclear development (see https://lnkd.in/eGZvbXZB). It is encouraging to see that clinical studies are now being done to look at the cancer incidence among those who work on nuclear test sites. The climate risks of these sites should also be assessed and addressed, because they are under-studied and a significant concern given the rapidly changing world environment and vulnerability of these sites. #publichealthmatters #nuclearweapons #MAPA #PSR #mms https://lnkd.in/eGZvbXZB

Taking radioactive waste and turning it into lifesaving medical isotopes: it’s another way we’re harnessing the therapeutic power of nuclear energy. Our team of experts developed an innovative process that separates the carbon isotope C-14 from spent resins produced during nuclear operations. The C-14 can then be used in medical studies and healthcare applications, while less of the remaining spent resin is classified as waste, reducing volume, simplifying disposal and lowering costs. We’re providing advanced solutions to some of today’s most unique challenges. https://lnkd.in/euEcgUzK #Framatome #FightCancer #FramatomeHealthcare #NuclearMedecine #CountOnIt.
