DID YOU KNOW: The Ministry of Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) leads a permitting project that involves creating opportunities to be filled across the natural resource sector (NRS). These roles support a streamlined process for obtaining permits to build commercial housing in response to the housing crisis. This project also addresses the connectivity and systemic upgrades in remote communities while working directly with Indigenous People as supported by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Employees allocated to this work hold a range of skillsets and work together, across ministries, to create and implement solutions that have a big impact. Through the current hiring project, the natural resource sector will reach for economic prosperity, increasing economic growth in BC through streamlining the permitting process, enabling shared and efficient decision-making, and attracting investments. The introduction of biodiversity net gain has caused a significant increase in The Landscape Partnership's ecology consultancy workload, and sadly we have had to decline to quote for some projects. We just can't do all the work we would like to. Recruitment at senior levels is challenging across the profession, so we can't just magic up new staff. I'm interested to hear how widespread my experience is, and if the development industry is managing to cope. Developers, are you finding it hard to get ecology consultants to help with BNG? Have you had projects delayed because of consultant shortages? Or are you, hopefully, having no issues in this regard? Ecology consultants, are you able to satisfy all developers who ask you for work, or are you too having to decline to quote? (pic of bat droppings in someone's roof, because I wasn't sure how to illustrate the question!!)

Much as I enjoy sitting behind my computer writing codes (Biostatistics) and running pipelines (Bioinformatics), I also take pride in engaging with research assistants, project technicians and rolling my sleeves for hands-on data collection.
