🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨
We’re excited to share a major legal victory! The D.C. Court of Appeals has ruled in favor of our clients, reversing the dismissal of key claims in the Stanton View lawsuit. This decision paves the way for nine Black, female, low- to moderate-income first-time homebuyers to pursue justice after being sold substandard housing through the District of Columbia’s affordable housing program.
🏡 The court ruled that D.C. government entities can be held accountable under the Consumer Protection Procedures Act (CPPA) when they facilitate the sale of unsafe homes. This unprecedented decision is a crucial step forward for housing rights in D.C.
Our clients faced hazardous living conditions, including foundation cracks, mold, and sewage issues, that forced them to leave their homes. Now, they have the chance to fight back and seek the compensation they deserve!
This is about holding institutions accountable and ensuring that everyone has the right to safe, habitable housing—no matter where they live or their income level. 💪
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to fight for justice for these homeowners! The NC Department of Commerce released its annual tier rankings today grouping counties based on their levels of economic distress. Rankings shifted for 18 counties in all - 16 of them rural - with nine counties improving and nine dropping. The tier ratings are mandated by law and help the state and others offer extra assistance to the counties most in need. Thirty-eight of the 40 most distressed counties are rural with Cumberland and Pitt the exceptions. For more about the 2025 tiers, visit https://ow.ly/5TK250Ujqex#InvestInRural#EconomicDevelopment
Bae, new Uytae Lee just dropped.
Although public hearings are well intentioned, they often reward the vocal minority, delay growth, and directly impact housing affordability. Developers that hold on to land while waiting for public hearings end up accruing significant carrying costs, and those costs are inevitably passed along to future homeowners. This artificially inflates the cost for housing overall.
In Kelowna, public hearings have led to arbitrary decisions around which apartment buildings can get approved. It's nonsense, and we need a better way.
In BC, this problem is slowly diminishing. Thanks to Bill 44, any project that complies with an Official Community Plan must skip public hearing. But for those looking to add further density, or unique and compelling commercial opportunities, uncertainty remains at a significant financial cost.
But don't take it from me. This video is a way more engaging way to discuss the topic!

What’s #housinginsecurity got to do with the legal sector? Hear from our Board CEO and Commissioner, Fiona McLeay, at the launch of our #Advancinghousingjustice report and grant round in June.
‘Housing is a fundamental right … it’s connected with our emotional and physical security and deeply rooted to our sense of belonging.
‘A lack of housing, therefore, can threaten social cohesion, and that in turn has implications for people’s interactions with the justice system and the rule of law. Those things are really important to us as the regulator of the legal profession and as a significant funder of #AccesstoJustice initiatives in Victoria.’

A report from a team of New Jersey housing experts found that as many as 29,000 tenants and tenant families may be evicted in the state every year based on legally deficient complaints. Now they're calling for greater oversight in landlord-tenant courts. https://lnkd.in/gNTNBB7q
