What type of ball possession best predicts success in LALIGA? The 2023/24 season of LALIGA EA SPORTS provides intriguing insights into how the duration of ball possessions in dynamic play (excluding set pieces) relates to team outcomes. Here are the key findings: EUROPEAN TEAMS (Group 1) Analyzing teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético de Madrid, it was found that: - Matches Won: Have more long possessions (>30 seconds) and fewer intermediate (11-30 seconds) and short possessions (≤10 seconds). - Matches Not Won: Register more intermediate and short possessions. REGELATION TEAMS (Group 2) In teams that have been relegated like Cádiz, Almería, and Granada: - Matches Won: Observe an increase in long possessions and a decrease in intermediate possessions. - Matches Not Won: Have more intermediate and short possessions. INTERMEDIATE TEAMS (Group 3) For teams that neither qualified for Europe nor were relegated: - Matches Won: Have fewer intermediate possessions and more short possessions. - Matches Not Won: Have more intermediate possessions and fewer short possessions. PRACTICAL CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that maintaining long possessions can be a key strategy for high-performing European teams. However, for relegated teams, balancing long and short possessions seems crucial to improving performance. On the other hand, intermediate teams benefit from a more direct or vertical game, with shorter possessions, when aiming for victory. REFLECTION Possession duration is highly dependent on the style of play. In LaLiga EA SPORTS, teams with higher budgets often adopt dominant playing styles with a predominance of long possessions. These teams aim to maintain possession and control the game, progressing through combinative play, which predisposes them to a high number of long possessions. With the exception of the final phase of possession or in key moments like recoveries in the opponent's half, these teams can also perform short possessions with a more direct approach. This analysis highlights the importance of adapting ball possession strategies according to the team's situation in the league. It was great to see U.S. #padel pioneers Daddy Yankee and Gabriel Perez Krieb (of the United States Padel Association (USPA), Taktika Padel, and the San Diego Stingrays) on a recent CNBC segment discussing the future of the sport in the U.S. as it relates to #business and #investment. While the segment did little to clear up the ongoing debate about how to actually pronounce "padel" (thoughts Patricio Misitrano? 😂 ) it did point out that padel is starting to give #pickleball some serious competition here in the U.S. And with mega-brands ranging from adidas to Red Bull to Qatar Airways making a major push into the sport globally, there's little doubt that padel will be featured on CNBC far more often in the future. A 27% hike in Norway’s Eliteserien, for example, along with 26% rises in the Polish Ekstraklasa and Romania’s SuperLiga.
