With the Rel-18 freeze, the first 5G-Advanced specifications are ready for implementation (for now, in legacy bands)
First 5G-Advanced Release now ready! 3GPP TSGs this week in Shanghai agreed on Release 18 specification freeze! 3 years after the 5G-Advanced Release 18 workshop the specs are now ready! https://nokia.ly/3VABtU1

"At the same time, it is obvious that toward the 6G era we will likely need a different approach in 3GPP, as splitting all the possible capabilities into the smallest possible level comes with a high likelihood of market fragmentation. While chipset manufacturers and network vendors might be talking about the same high-level feature, in practice they might select another subset of the same high-level feature, resulting in an implemented feature that could not be activated." While not trivial, (re-)defining UE categories/classes/profiles might help mitigating market fragmentation and bridging the gap between implemented and activated features.

I still remember some horror faces when I said once that #5GBroadcast' default application better be streaming than a repetition of the "Mobile DTT" concept from 25 years ago when streaming did not exist and phones were just used as phones. Mobile TV (and Radio) are here today, they just happened over time, perhaps in a quite chaotic way - welcome to the Internet. Call them Sounds, iPlayer, TuneIn, PlutoTV, Mediathek,... These apps are installed in phones, cars, tablets, smartwatches (the later at least for radio in my case) and the UX is just whatever people want it to be. The ambition of service providers to strengthen their role in all this new world towards 2030 is also apparent (the recently published ORF Strategy 2030 https://lnkd.in/dMvsCq3y is one more added to the growing list following BBC https://lnkd.in/dt477DdB and more). In the efforts in 5G-MAG MEDIA ACTION GROUP to offer members the opportunity to explore technologies and take the most out of them for their own services and applications, this year's demo related to 5G Broadcast has been all about deploying a streaming architecture and integrating 5G Broadcast within it. The demo shows the concept put forward by 3GPP in their various multimedia systems to detach service from transport mechanisms. Moreover, the transport technology no longer prescribes user experience, access to services and delivery protocols. There's a video recorded on the spot from Thomas Stockhammer and me here: https://lnkd.in/djhzr44M and my slides from the IEEE BTS session are attached. Kudos to the contributors to the demo (Bitstem, Dolby Laboratories Fraunhofer FOKUS Motion Spell ORS Group (Austrian Broadcasting Services), Qualcomm, Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM). Thanks Dr. Peter Siebert and Thomas Stockhammer for the good show. Ever wondered how can your mobile phone play a video recorded by an ultra high definition camera and with hundreds of gigabytes in size smoothly? Technology advancements and demand for high resolution video have significantly increased in the past decades. Users are now able to stream 4K content on their devices without any interruption. This revolution caused the file sizes of these videos to go from few megabytes to hundreds of gigabytes making it hard for content providers to store and manage large files. It has also increased the demand for highly capable network solutions to handle the data traffic sent with the increase of digital content. But what is the solution, can companies continue expanding their data servers? This is where compression technologies come into play. Content providers can shrink the size of 100GB file to 100MB in order to distribute these files to the end user. There are dozens of compression technologies in the market that make the day to day video distribution smooth and possible. The goal of each compression (codec) can be different for example the H.264 generation of codecs are used for distribution purposes therefore, used in streaming platforms like Youtube. Conversely, codec like JPEG XS, targets professional environments like live production or broadcast where high quality video data is contentiously sent from venue for example a stadium to the studios and to the viewers without any latency and quality degradation. #videocompression #codecs #broadcast #liveproduction #Compressiontechnologies #H264 #JPEGXS #tech

A Japanese partnership has just presented the first high-speed 6G prototype device. Japan’s leading telecom companies announced the successful test results of this device and revealed that it outperforms the existing 5G technology by a factor of 20. They mentioned that this device can operate with rates of up to 100Gbps, in the 300 GHz band outside and in the 100 GHz band indoors. However, this technology is still in experimental stages and not yet commercially viable. The potential of 6G networks extends far beyond the 4G to 5G network transition which was mainly focused on improving experiences related to video streaming and mobile browsing. 6G networks promises to unlock possibilities like real-time holographic communication and immersive virtual and mixed-reality experiences. Let’s keep our hopes up and wait for the next exciting mind-blowing updates. #6Gnetwork #Telecom #Technology https://lnkd.in/e5edr_nz.
