A growing number of employers who oversee their insurance plans are beginning to offer their workers more preventive care by cutting ties with insurers and building clinics in their offices. The idea? Save money by investing in primary care to improve worker health and reduce overall health care spending. According to Shawn Gremminger, CEO of the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions, there’s enough return on ditching insurers that 20% of the National Alliance’s members work directly with doctors and hospitals, and 30% more plan to follow suit in the coming years. Read on for a summary of the Kaiser Family Foundation's 2023 Employer Health Benefits Annual Survey findings, but a standout for me is that 47% of covered workers have a PPO plan, despite the higher costs that may be associated with it. For many it seems the importance of accessing specialized care not available within their insurance network, or simply not needing to obtain referrals, still outweighs higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
